At 3 cu ft, it won't be boomy to the point of being obnoxious, just maybe a little of that advent-like lower midbass/bass bloom. I think it will be a very good sounding combo. Another option to play with would be to toy around with an aperiodic membrane to see if you can even tighten things up a bit more or possibly reduce box size a bit.

Good and interesting suggestion on the aperiodic dampening. Seems that way, you would also have an amount of control when you're forced into compromising
with a fixed bow size. I understand it will allow a slightly smaller box than would otherwise be the case. Anybody out there tried this? I remember when Dynaudio offered parts and kits, most of them were dampened this way. They were said to be nice kits.

I think my dad had one of those boxes (exactly same legs, for sure) for a mono hi-fi, which I used to monkey with as a kid.

However, I believe it was loaded with an EV "Wolverine," probably 12".
It had a little whizzer cone.

I would imagine those type of Hi-fi boxes were common in the early to mid sixties.

I'd like to make a couple of those. ;)

I built a pair of aperiodic, small box, single driver speakers. Used the CSS FR125S, a 4" full-ranger, based on the math from North Creek, found here . I did this to accomodate power handling at lower frequencies. Results were "meh", not from the design or principle but due to the shortcomings of the driver and application. They are doing duty as surrounds in an HT setup, at present, where they do an admirable job. Dyna probably did it best, ala A-25.
 
Drivers for HT Waveguide project.

I have been collecting drivers and L-Pads for my Home Theater project, which will done with JBL woofers and EconoWave HF in mesquite cabinets. The front three cabinets are built, and the rear two need to be cut and put together. The lumber for the last two has been in my workshop for about three years, drying.

The 6" X 12" waveguide will be used with the LE14H-3's in the front right and left speakers. The two rear speakers will use the 8" waveguide along with the LE111H's. The center front will use the 6" waveguide along with the LE10H. I bought this speaker simply because the price was right (cheeep), knowing that it's surround was glued to the wrong side (front), and would rather use another LE111H. Maybe one will rear it's head before the project is finished.

But first, the waveguides need to get here. And I need to be available to begin the project. First comes a two week road trip to the state of Washington. It will take us right through the Bay Area, and a stop at ZilchLab is planned. It will be great to see his setup, but I will probably come away green with envy.

I don't know about that Wiredbecker. We did a group by for the guides and drivers. So...

Wave Guides - $22.75 per pair
Selenium drivers - $45.00 per pair
Cabs with woofs - $15.00
Total $82.75

Listening enjoyment - priceless.

Oh, MAN, could they have gotten any more motor on those H-3s? :drool:
 
Econowave JBL L26 Type

Here are what I would deem my "mini" Econowave versions. These are housed in recycled JBL L26 cabs, JBL 2414 Eon horn drivers, 10" pro audio woofers with flat wire 2.25" vc, cast frames, 93 spl, 500 wat capability.

The sound is striking to say the least. The horn drivers are on LPads and are turn up only about 1/4 way for a good solid blend- they are very efficient for sure. They seem to be relatively smooth, both have new diphragms. The very top end may be rolled off a bit -but that's to be expected. Xover & 1.4k, 12/db/oct.

They woofers right now have respectable low end, close to 55hz, but as they break in should hit their tageted, rated 45hz.
Overall I am very pleased. For their size they have a lot of solid sonic impact. My neighbors came over to see the new project and were blown away at the sound vs size of these! I may have inadvetantly sold the the project when I told them about the idea here!

For finish I am just going to put a simple round metal fitted grill over the 10" driver- to match another larger 12" 3 way set I have already. The flush fitted horn lens worked out well on looks and practicality. So folks don't toss those nice old wood boxes, recycle them for a great sounding and good looking speaker!

dc270, that is phenominal work. The way you inset the waveguides has to be the best ever. You are indeed a skilled man with a router.

And I agree completely with your comments about using old cabinets. Some old cabinets are simply to nice to waste.
 
I found those 10" on 'that" auction web sight, $30 each, with shipping included! They are a no name, i.e. probably Chinese copies- but are actually very well made! I took a chance and was pretty pleased for the $$ spent!.
The paint is a textured paint from Home Depot- $7+ a can!!! I really like it, use it on all my projects, cover a lot of sins.....

Are you sure 2414H? That's a neodymium-magnet compression driver. I'm not finding it in EON, rather, PRX series.... :dunno:

I'm searching to link you to JBL network schematics for your driver/waveguide combo.

In any case, looks like you've built some E'Wave ROCKERS there.... :guitar:
 
OOOOOPS- my bad those are JBL 2418H drivers on the lens! Thanks for the point out Z.
