Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

So for me it's sell the HF Altec driver, build a xover to try an get the D210 to play nice on 811

That was Kegger a couple days ago. I've been off this thread & I'm catching up. I have a pair of off brand PA horns that are the same shape as 811's but with a threaded mount. That would be easier to experiment with than 811s with adapters if you want to borrow them to fool with.

Zilch, do you have a suggested crossover for this EWave to be used with Altec 414z? would i just use variant version for 95+ woofer efficiency? or has anyone actually tried the horn with 414z and fine tuned the xo? thanks!

gogo, you'd want the higher efficiency version. Start with the 1200hz crossover point on the 414z and fine tune if you have a few extra parts laying around with similar values.

Ray gonna be an E'Waver, too? :thmbsp:

You never know... ;)

Actually, I always planned on building some. I just haven't had time or $ to devote to it yet. Now I can see some daylight and drivers are on sale...a good combination. Maybe I'll make a Mega Boomboxa Rustica. :music:

can you tell me how much cap value will change how much on xo point?

i think zilch told me about this path when i was fiddling around with 811/806 combo. just had to try and hear myself...guess it took me that long.

anyone with firsthand experience/comparison of 811 & this EWave?

414Z is 16-Ohms, no?

If so, it needs different lowpass values for the woofer.

If not, what Dave said.... :thmbsp:

Look at the PE chart:

Yes. The stupid $9.90 E'Wave is better in many respects, constant directivity being a major one.

811 beats it when it comes to imaginary gonadotrophic effect, however.

['Course 511 beats them both in that respect.... ;) ]

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

i really don't care for big balls....:D

yes, 414z's are 16 ohms.

Well, I'm not sure if the gonadotrophic effect is imaginary.....:D

Bauhausler, I've bolted up an adapter to an 811 and screwed on my second D210 so it's already to go. Using bananas on jumpers, I can swap the drivers in and out of circuit literally in seconds here. .
Going to do a bit of tweaking tonight on them, so I may report back later.

BTW, I lost track of it in one of the other threads, but someone posed the question about sealing the 811B in the 846A Valencia and adding ports to it replicating the 846B arrangement and if that would help the bass. Was that ever answered/resolved???

BTW, I should have a woofer tester 3 here on Monday to resolve these T/S issues on the 416Z.
Cool, Dave!

That'll shut down ~40 years of speculation.

And you'll never have to guesstimate the actual impedance at a crossover point again.... :thmbsp:

You KNOW what I'm always sayin' here -- "Measure...." ;)

I don't know that anyone here has ever done it, or even measured to determine what the actual tuning of the sides-of-the-horn vented version is.

The three best arguments for doing it are:

1) Altec did.

2) You gain control, and can vary the tuning at will.

3) You shut down some of the horn resonance by fixedly mounting it....

yes, sir.
i'll do that tomorrow...i have to leave work now for a fair. seriously...i'm not just trying to avoid the quiz....:D

Mega Boomboxa

Need some casters? I think I still have some spares from an equipment rack.
We use "Crew" for that out West here:

['Course, y'all've got Powerman back there.... ;) ]

Hey fellas, newman finally convinced me to jump on the bandwagon.

Any thoughts on bastardizing a pair of Klipsch KG4.5s?

They are mint! I love cutting things up. The horns will barely fit.
