Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

RULER FLAT from 2KHz to 18KHz... with a small dip at 19KHz and just a little ripple (like +- 2 dB or so) between 800 Hz and 2KHz. VERY nice. I mean, almost TEXTBOOK FLAT, with no compensation.

In any case, however, if someone wants an alternative horn-driver combo, that requires nothing but a second-order highpass filter at about 1100-1500 Hz or so and an L-pad... I can say, the combo of the D210Ti driver on the EV 8HD flare WORKS!!!

An exponential diffraction horn, if no comp is actually required, it's not constant directivity.

No polars provided, and no HF spec either, alas, my guess is it beams like crazy.

Until proven otherwise, it goes directly to the Zilchster's "Nasty-Ass Horns" list along with the JBL exponentials.... :yes:

Here's where I'm at. The cabinets are made of 3/4" walled 12" PVC pipe. Baffles are cloth filled phenolic and MDF. Crossovers with 200watt 'quick adjust' L-pad... and my little wood/phenolic circle cutter:D

Wiredbecker scored some empty C36s. We engineered a way to install a new baffle in front of the old one and still have the original slide-in grilles fit. They are full-blown LE14A/Selenium D220Ti EconoWaves right now.

More to do yet, sealing everything properly, measuring and optimizing the tuning, etc.; you know the ZilchLab drill -- stethoscope, yada, yada. But tonight, we just fired this one up, checked the driver phase w/RTA, and listened. And listened more. Then, we listened some more. :music:

Two halves with an insert - boy, that stuff is tough to manhandle on the table saw. It's freakin' heavier than you might think. The 1/2 homemade flycutter is dangerous if me isn't careful, but she makes perfect circles up to 15" in anything reasonable in a blink:D Hehe, I stand a piece of 3/8 ply between me and it when I'm running it:yes:

Whadya think... wrap them in veneer with several coats lacquer on top?

I love seeing you guys update these older speaks.... retaining the beauty and increasing the listenability. It's a perfect solution!

Solution to that is easy, in this application... a small "supertweeter" horn (wide-dispersion), brought in at 6dB/oct. above about 10KHz, at around 1-2 dB below the "flat" level of the main horn. That, plus a VHF rolloff on the main horn (18KHz or so) should get the power balance into a much more reasonable uniformity.

Yes, there will be some comb filtering... but I've done this before... and I defy anyone to actually HEAR the comb filtering, in real-life... above 10KHz, it's damn hard to pick out, even in cases where it'd be much more pronounced than this...

Nice I didn't think that combo would fit in there. But wait, you didn't offset and mirror image the woof and EWG? :D Maybe I'll upgrade my woofs and pass mine onto Coy. :scratch2:
 
What a payoff! Listening to this was a real treat last night. Hard to believe it's only going to get better from here on out.

We're working with Jacks's lowpass for LE14A plus the less than 95 dB highpass.... :yes:

And me, I VERY much enjoy seeing what other AKers come up with implementing the E'Wave and Indignia designs.

We've got some REALLY clever and creative DIY talent at work here; seems like our most significant accomplishment in the "AK Collaboratives" has been kick-starting more of that.... :thmbsp:

So I recall there was a KLH six conversion? Can someone tell me what post # it is or a link with pictures/details?

I have a pair of KLH six with I think one bad woofer and maybe a tweeter too, I don't recall.

Anyhow, they sure are nice cabs...

I gather this modification will be superior to the that of the original KLH six?

Total cost of materials/drivers etc been calculated?

Also a concern, I haven't heard a horn yet that doesn't make my ears bleed...or at best make me still prefer soft domes.

BMS is on the way while I continue to search for 2452's. Even after the BMS arrive, the Econowaveguides will always have a home in or on one cabinet or another.
 
I believe the total cost of the engineered wave is $150.00, details in the first page.

These waveguides do not act like a "typical horn" nor sound like a horn at all to me.
