Sounded really good!

I'm running Optimus Pro 7's with a Pioneer SX-580 at my desk here at work and it also sounds good. No bass but I'm not trying to rock the house during office hours.
 
I've got the Monsoon MM-700 and NHT M00s. Both are very good nearfield desktop speakers. The NHT have no volume control so your source needs one or you need a line stage preamp (like the NHT PVC).

I went through a similar process about 3 years ago, where I tried a few of the packaged pc speakers, including an Inland, an Altec model, and a Monsoon flat panel system, (all were 2.1 systems).

I found that for music, In the long run I did not like any of them.

After trial and error, I have now found a pc system I really enjoy. It consists of a sonic t-amp, and a pair of Texton speakers.

My advice would be to start out with an inexpensive t-amp, and then pick out a pair of small used bookshelves that you like. If you ever tire of them, you could just sell them, and start over with a different pair.
I've run the t-amp and my computer with everything from JBL Aqaurius, to Vintage Ar-4's, to very cheap plastic cased RadioShaq Speakers.

By starting with the t-amp, It would allow you to replace components one at a time, as your budget and needs increase.

There is all sorts of future upgrades you can do with a computer based audio system, including USB dacs, Streaming of music, ext... When done right, I believe a computer based system could sound really good.


Edit: One more thing, Out of the pre-packaged systems I tried. I liked the Monsoon system the most. It had a cool factor to it. I remember it sounded really good with some music, but seemed to lack with others. What it did do well, it did very well.

I've got my sound card plugged into my NAD receiver. The receiver is powering a pair of NHT Super Ones.

When you put the sound card output into a receiver or pre-amp, you can use Audiophile quality speakers.:music:
 
while the klipsch promedia 2.1 is fairly decent it was their lacking in coherency that led me back into vintage. two little speakers diconnected from the bass and totally lacking in a full ruich midrange caused me to refoam my jbl l-100T's. then just line out to my preamp and off to the races. right now in the office I have this

I'm willing to volunteer my recently acquired black Minimus 7's if you feel like doing before and after measurements. They're on kitchen duty right now.
 
i never understood the love for realistic m-7`s , i had two pair and never really thought they sounded that great . right now i`m really enjoying my DIY speakers , 7in. dayton aluminum cone woofer and morel mdt29 from parts express . i built these with the help of the PE tech associates and they helped me choose a xover and i could not be happier . i have them running through a sansui 7070 and they rock !

What was your total cost for the pair?
 
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/sho...xpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=260-146 http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=260-303 , here are the links from PE for the parts excluding the mdf boards i got at LOWES which cost me about $15 for 3 15 x 36 in. boards and some 16ga, wire that i had laying around . not real cheap but it was worth it to me after they were done . the ports are 2 and one sixteenth in. from card board shipping tube that i had laying around and fit my hole saw perfectly .they may be slightly large for this cabinet size [15.5 x 8.5 x 11] but i think it worked out pretty well . plenty of good deep bass , nice mids and sparkling highs and good volume from a smaller cabinet .

I have really liked my Design Acoustic PS 6's. Responsible size, great sound , still affoadable and found. If you really want a top shelf producer then Genelec would look/ sound very good as well all be it $$$!
