Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

With the DCX2496 I can reverse phase with the twist of a knob, so I check the response at the crossover frequency to see what seems best. It sounded very good, certainly bigger and more dynamic than the low sensitivity Advent woofer. But perched atop the Advent woofer the sound just seems a little better integrated and maybe gives a sense of more accuracy. I notice that piano, for instance, sounds a little bothersome to me thru the Altec woofer while pure and clean thru the Advent.

It's difficult to convince anyone to rip 811Bs out of M19s and replace them with E'Wave; just not the same, somehow. ;)

Andyman did it with Valencias earlier in this thread, and concluded as you have, I believe, Russell, that E'Wave actually sounded better.

Not to worry; I'm working up an option that'll satisfy even the most dedicated of gonadotrophists here.... :thmbsp:

I can hardly wait.....bring it ON!!!!

Kegger, 2225H in 5 cu ft tuned to 40 hz works great, thats what 4647 is. The "messiness" around 900 hz @ 45 degrees isnt too noticeable, infact, I thought it slightly cleaner than the 2235H. ( In normal listening )

Russellc

Yep that's what I've been using (4647) for the response and impedance graph's.
Reason I wanted to try an find "accurate" measurements was I'm plotting the info
into Passive Crossover Designer and designing a low pass xover for the 2225.

I modeled a 2nd order, then swept through all the other variables when I tried a
1st order an found with tweaking parts it looked quite a bit better to me, humm....

It sounds better with a 1st order as well, the top of the woofer is more "open" now.

In case anyone is interested this is what I'm using at the moment, for the xover. :music:

Hello Zilch

I believe we know from your (and others') work that a quality midbass driver does a better job in the 500Hz - 1 kHz region; it's the two-way vs. three-way thing.

It does. Is that what your are going for a little better from 500-1K?? It's really hard to say though without a good listen. Curious to see what you think. If you are why not just bite the bullet. It may make a difference but not as much as a dedicated driver would. There is no reason you can't have 3 way Econowaves. Yeah I know sacrilege!

I guess I wasn't doing a good job of describing this change. It definitely sounded better than the 811b ! .........Just still not quite where I want it to be.

After some distractions I finally got the crossovers assembled.

Now to finish up with the speaker side of things. I'm sure ports, tuning and new baffles will be in the future if I stick with the Madrids.

I can't wait to see this one. Will it use the 811 or some other "big" horn that fits into the existing enclosure? Can we assume the stock Altec driver won't be a part of this regardless of the horn choice? :tears:

Very nice job! :thmbsp:

Remember the HF driver polarity thing. If your woofers are postive polarity, which is easily verified using a 1.5 volt battery, the Seleniums get connected opposite the polarity printed on those boards....

1) "Some other."

2) I have no Altec drivers here anymore.

3) What others do will be on them.... ;)

I'm EconoWaven'

You can add me to the list.

The crossover is the 95dB plus variety. Next up is tuning the boxes to get some better low end out of them. It's laking a bit form what I can tell(I did reverse the HF connection as instructed).

Here is a look at the Model 14 12" LF driver.

Here is a look at the Madrid box with the 12" out. You can see the original baffle behind the new one. The original held the 420Y. This is what I have to work with for now.

Happy to be a member of this fine AK collaberation club.

Congratulations, Rex!

That's one gorgeous setup you have put together there. :thmbsp:

[Checkin' to see if Rex stole my painter's masking tape.... ;) ]

*Hopin' Zilch doesn't notice the other rolls missin'* :para:

Thanks on the set up compliment. Now to deal with the porting situation :scratch2:

I was curious if removing the dome tweeter and working with that hole to start with would be a good idea. Maybe taking out the 846B Valencia's and setting the horns on top would be an easier better idea. :scratch2:

A very good idea, in fact.

You'll be able to try different port lengths from the front of the cabinet.

What's the hole diameter?

[I'm not gettin' the Valencia thing.... :dunno: ]

[I'm not gettin' the Valencia thing.... :dunno: ]

I'm gonna guess in the 3" range as the outer diameter of the tweater is 4 1/4"

Just pulled the tweeter and the hole is 3".

As to the Valencia's I meant disconnecting the 811 and x over and using the waveguide set up instead.

That's a workable range for experimenting.

The idea is to make a plywood square with a hole in it to accept PVC or ABS pipe ducts, with mounting holes in the same locations as those of the tweeter, and foam tape to make a seal between the plywood and the baffle face.

Make several, maybe, for different duct lengths. You'll wrap the O.D. of the ducts with that blue tape where they go through the plywood to seal that connection, and they'll simply slip through the tweeter hole to the inside.

It appears the rear panels are removable. You'll need a good seal with closed-cell foam tape there, as well, available from PE or your local ACE hardware....

Rex, I would also think about flipping the cabs upside as well.

You'll get closer Woofer to Comp driver spacing an when using the tweeter hole for
the port it won't be in between the 2 drivers for any possable interference there to.
