Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

A big chunk of the magic going on is with the constant directivity. The NS-1000s don't do CD. I would expect improvements in imaging with the ewave at the expense of a little bit less flat response.

Advanced Speaker Design adheres to the scientific method- the formation of hypotheses, testing, measurement, statistical analysis and evaluation of replicatable results. It's a discipline perfected over the decades by dedicated, highly-educated men with pencil moustaches in white coats. Experts.
I am not one of those people. That's probably why amateurs such as I should never be permitted to handle sophisticated electronic apparatus such as electrical tape. I am concerned that the guerilla group P.E.T.A. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Acoustics) are monitoring the 'experiments' that have been recently conducted here in Fukuoka.

Econo-Wave Random Application #3 (in a series of...)
Introducing the Wave Of Mutilation (Pixies, 1989) with special scenic shot.

Yamaha NS-1000M - EWG - Kpm crossover.
Maybe this is hard to believe, but it sounded like a NS-1000M with the Econo-WG stuck on top.
Woofer connected to X/O LF better than run full-range.
Random, ambiguous adjectives: articulate, fast, detailed, smooth.
Will try swapping around C100 values in the Zobel to tune mids... hey, it worked with the last project!... really need the woofer measurements, I suppose. I'm curious what would happen if I whacked the Yamaha woofers on the large, ported cabs:scratch2:
Quite satisfied with the HPM-100 version, but I feel the Yamaha project is the next worth pursuing, if only to appease the Econowave Gods.

Mounted the waveguides in boxes. Read (somewhere) of a bloke applying modelling clay to the exterior of a waveguide/horn thingy to address what he described as 'ringing'. My wife watched me conducting this high-tech procedure, and couldn't resist comparing me with a pre-schooler. My wife thinks she is funny. She is also no longer in my will. I can't say for certain whether the clay made for improvement, however my notes tell me last night was the first time that I have preferred the attenuator at the '0' position, rather than in a minus increment.

Im sure PETA likes what they are hearing!:music::thmbsp:

Only imaginary? :worried: I'm sure I first saw Model 19's back in the seventies, but when I saw a pair of 811B's on eBay for $100 bucks I was just stunned. Maybe it was the alcohol? But I HAD to have a pair. I'd have bought 511's but they are perhaps a bit too much gonadatrophic for someone only 6'-2", 190 lbs, eh? :scratch2:

Zilch is right about the measurements. I still like and enjoy on a regular basis my 511B and 811B Altec horns. They have their sound, these have theirs. The E'wave will measure better and is more precise, in a monitor like fashion, the Altec is a bit more difuse in its sound. Sometimes I find it a bit more like live music, which can also be difuse, and rarely "images" either! Still, when properly set up are amazing in their own way to listen to.

I've never listened, but those NS-1000 types seem to be a Holy Grail of sorts, so it's just a bit surprising.
Chopping up old Advents and HPMs is one thing, but we'll see. I guess the proof is in the pudding
Depending on what the JA-3056A measurements dictate, if the application proceeds I'd build new cabs and source another set of woofers. NS-690 is also up for consideration.

You've said what I couldn't. CD was the motivation behind the NS-1000 EWG. Imaging did improve, although the sweet spot seemed slightly narrower than with the Kpm version.

Will those Yammmy woofers bolt into the new cabs you made?

If they would without really modding anything I'd be curious in what happens! :thmbsp:

Also can we see some pics of your Waveguide boxes?

As soon as I can get back to The ManShun, I'll check out the Yamaha fit and take some photos of the waveguide mounted. They're just simple boxes knocked together.

Uhmmm, LE14's gonna drop right in there, I believe, or a drum sander will get you where you need to be in a matter of minutes. I'm measuring 12-3/8" in an S99 cab here.

HPM-100 woofer is "oversize" also, I believe....

I measured one of my le14s around the gasket line, and the diameter works out to be about 12.4 inches, about what Zilch says.:thmbsp:

I've been thinking..(uh-oh..) I have the cabinets & woofers from a set of Bose 501 series IIs in my basement- would these be a good foundation for a waveguide project? I'd have to build crossovers, too - the originals are long gone. I'm pretty sure the woofs will be good to 2000 hz or so...

Just as long as you don't aim the waveguide out the back or the sides! :D

Well, I'm a little discouraged. I can't seem to get an adequate bass response from my ewave L56s. I did the 1.5v battery test, and the result was that which ever way made the woofer extend outward -- the post connected to the positive end of the battery was wired to the LF+ on the board. Does that make sense?

econowave with 2a3?

Hi,

is anyone here who build a econowave speaker for single ended tube amps with low power?

I am interested in a econowave speaker for my 2a3 amp.

I have all components but no woofer.I tried the woofer section from my 605a altec but it had very little bass and sounded not balanced.(with my 2a3)

Now i am looking for a tube friendly woofer from eminence-maybe the omega 15 which is used in the 4pi from pispeakers.

Do you have any suggestion?

Thanks and greetings from germany

Seems as though that JBL woofer is negative polarity; connect the LF(+) board output to the black terminal on the woofer, and the (-) to the red for standard.

That'll correct the phase, which has its greatest influence in the crossover region, integrating the mids from both drivers, but I don't believe it's going to improve the bass response. Turn the L-pad all the way to "Min," and only the woofers will be playing. If both woofers are connected in the same phase, that will indicate the available bass response from L56s, which should be respectably good, barring other issues. Then, advance the L-pad settings to bring the waveguide response into balance....

Thanks, Z. I think I may have just jumped the gun on evaluation. All day I've been running music through them and the bass has improved. There will be much tweaking of these speakers before I can get them to be "right," I think.

I've only fed them real wattage (20-30W and that was LOUD) for a little bit of time so far, so I think the surrounds just need a little bit of a workout to get limber. I'm pretty sure they're original, but they are in fine shape. During the waveguide implementation I gave each woofer surround a light brushing of armor-all to make myself feel better. Who knows if that was helpful, but you can't ignore that new-car-smell...:D

Here's a couple pics of the test mules.

Speaking of funk... I thought I smelled something funny and here I see the issue. Your speakers have the DASUNDSOCKENINDAPORTEN syndrome.

BTW, don't leave that painters tape on more than about a week or two..

Armor all? Rubber or foam?

About the bass - I've gone through four bass XO scenarios:

1. Wide open. Too much interference in the mids, but good bass
2. Stock EWXO. Subdued bass, listener fatigue.
3. Optimized for 123A-1, bass is back but "congested", lacks snap, fatigue continues.
4. 1st order @ 2000. Jury is still out. More "effortless" than 2 or 3, better integration than 1.

I should have measurements....but this is the House of Blatant Subjectivity for the time being.

The fun continues...

Thanks for the tape tip. Noted.

I thought the sock would lend a little natural warmth to the hot selenium...

rubber or foam?
yes. :D

Apparently, (source = Lansing heritage forum) these 118 woofers are a bit of a one-off for JBL at the time. Made only for the L56, and used a rubber-impregnated (nice pun, there) foam surround. I'd heard of folks using armor all on rubber and even cloth surrounds, so I figured what the hey. I've thought all along that I may need to replace the surrounds since they are original. I just want to try all cheap and lazy -- within reason -- options first.

Seeing as these are 10 inchers... Maybe a higher crossover point is in order. Thanks for the input, Clmrt.

Oh, and I have no other audio measuring equipment besides me own ears an' noodle.

I have some "more data" time ahead of me for sure, but I really didn't notice much difference with or without funkyplugs. But that was early on... I'll figure it out.
