wave guide cutout size?

Does anyone know what the cutout size needs to be for the waveguide?

Picked up my junkyard-dog 77 cent Yamahas. Man, they should have fallen on their swords when they built these. 1993 vintage, I don't think I've ever seen a more cheaply made speaker from a company with a good name. :tears: Big manly woofer from the front, flimsy piece of crap from the rear. Apparently the original ferrite magnet was too small so they GLUED a second ring magnet to the back plate...
 
Yup, if they're boomy and you want to mitigate that.

Plugged, you'll likely want some boundary reinforcement.... :yes:

Everything Yamaha ever built was not food for the Gods. In fact, there are few audio companies that I can say never released a dog.. Infinity, JBL, Pioneer, Marantz, etc, ect. all fall in to the group that had less than stellar releases. However, they all had other products that were at least very good too.

Yeah, almost all of the consumer grade stuff has been on a constant slide downhill since 1980 at least. The iPod must surely be the sonic bottom.

These Yamaha cabinets are so cheaply made I'm thinking of eco-waving my L50's or my oldest L-100's instead. Maybe make a new L-50 front baffle for the E-W and and a LE14A???

Personally, I'd suggest you relegate the Yamahas to an unsuspecting neighbor.. :D

L50 could be a decent candidate, but not a front running choice due to it's limited bass performance.

L100, while a nice candidate for the upgrade (and it definitely is an upgrade) is also worth fair money on the market. Personally, I'd sell those off and find a better candidate for less money.

In my opinion, an EWG project with the right low end support, ends up being a VERY good speaker.

In my mind, if you have a pair of LE14A, there is no further discussion needed. However, I'd build a good cabinet best suited to LE14A rather than something too small.. As I recall, 3.5 Cu ft is a nice size for LE-14A. FWIW.

The second magnet is usually done in reverse polarity to make them "video shielded" :D

That's interesting. I wonder why that doesn't also kill (or at least attenuate) the flux through the pole???:scratch2: It looks cheap as hell though.

Yes, LE14's on the shelf. I wonder how large of an addition I'd have to append onto the back of an L50 or L100 to get to 3-1/2 cf?

HERESY! :no: (no wait, those are Klipsch) Yeah, I know, I am aware of their sonic shortcomings, but they define the sound of a certain era. I have three pair of them and I was considering selling two pair of them and e-waving the third. It always seems difficult to get someone to buy them for what I have in them. Far easier to gut the drivers but then I wind up with nice empty cabinets begging for drivers. They are not but an inch or two deeper than the L-50's, about the same internal volume.

An intriguing option, but I'm not sure I have the skills.

That'll correct the phase, which has its greatest influence in the crossover region, integrating the mids from both drivers, but I don't believe it's going to improve the bass response. Turn the L-pad all the way to "Min," and only the woofers will be playing. If both woofers are connected in the same phase, that will indicate the available bass response from L56s, which should be respectably good, barring other issues. Then, advance the L-pad settings to bring the waveguide response into balance.... :yes:

You know, sometimes it sounds like its bass response, but I guess its just the effect of the mids filling in. I'm still a little suspicious, but it "seemed" like the bass improved when the polarity was correct. ( Of course I also listened to my L-pads wired backwards, and liked that to)

I thought you might like to check out my econowaves. I just got done with them, although I have a little tweaking to do. Thank you to all the guys who gave me good advice on these and from this thread. I used Selenium D210Ti drivers with JBL waveguides and Dayton Classic 10" woofs.

Yes I did. I used a good birch plywood like cabinet makers use instead of MDF board. So I had to do a little extra bracing inside. Then I went the easy route on the finish and used a stone texture spray.
