Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I couldn't believe the difference in mine when I had them refoamed. If you think you have bass now you have no idea what you are missing. :yikes:

Duff actually, it depends.. :)

Since I have the woofer tester, if I can get the FS to 30 or so I Believe I'll
get just as good if not better bass then what a new foaming will provide. :D
(then yes I have to hope the surround doesn't decinagrate on me) :thumbsdn:

Out of curiosity, how would you manage to get better bass?

Quite often (At least what I've found) is new surrounds are stiffer and so FS actually
would go up from what stock is suppose to be, now after breakin it drops back down
after the foam softens up some, but how far? Will it always go back down to original
FS specs? I've also seen some newer foams that were "softer" and could do opposite
of what I said, but most I've seen are stiffer though. YMMV :)

Again this is just speculation and I'm testing at this point, but I believe it has merrit in it.

I do not know how I ever got along without one of the Woofer testers, I'm using the crap
out of this thing, testing drivers, testing all kinds of old whole speaker systems, the works. :smoke:

Gotcha. Haven't encountered that yet, when you finish my LE14 refoam, I'll check and see. :) Honestly, though, I haven't read a review yet with LE14As where people didn't get dramatically better bass after a refoam. It'll be interesting to see if you get yours back close to spec.

Yep wondered that 2 Dave, but then I think well if there old surrounds were stiff and
the FS was out of spec and quite high, then I'd think the refoam would show a pretty
big upgrade in the bass department.

Sure when I do the foams on the 14's we can do yours as well. :)

Requesing inclusion in the “Official AK E'Waver List”

I am listening to a mofi copy of Aja in mono while I finish assembling the second speaker.

These where a pair of L16’s that my brother in law forgot he owned and he passed my way. They will find a home in my sanolet sized office at work.

The cabinets were stripped, refinished and woofers refoamed. I used the 6X6 waveguide and the 210. I am astonished by the sound generated by these little guys.

I’m starting on cabinets for a LE14/220 version to replace my biamped Altec 411/511’s.

I have followed this thread from its inception and checked out almost every reference. The amount of information available is truly mind boggling. (at least for my feeble brain)

I wish to extend my sincere thanks to those that conceived this project as well as those that contributed to its success. It has been most rewarding.

Well I hope you get an improvement.

Maybe someone should make an eWave with a set of nice ADS woofers with butyl rubber surrounds that should last a half century. Hmmm now there's an idea.:scratch2: Someone got a pair of L620's lying around? After I typed that last sentence that's actually an excellent candidate for eWave.

You had to go and throw that out there didn't you...

I have an orphan ADS M12/90 and a orphan L1090/2. The M12/90 has ( 2 ) 206-0386 Woofers and the L1090/2 has ( 2 ) 206-0358 Woofers. I offered all the drivers for sale in Barter Town with no takers... I see no use for them.. but no wait.. you go and say that.. Well, if I used one of each driver in each cabinet... I'd have a matched pair... That really could be a killer system, although not all that efficient... AD-WAVES

:lmao::lmao:

Check pages 12 and 13 in the ADS brochure, you'll see the L620 is THE PERFECT ADWave candidate. How do acoustic suspension eWave's sound anyway?

Done, conditionally, George, pending Jack's concurrence that "Mini-Waves" made with the small JBL PT Waveguides qualify, and your posting the completed pair. If so, you're the first.

It certainly works in those L16s, looks like! I was going to try that in the next pair of AR4s that came in, but I have a pair of L19s in the dungeon that are going to get serious consideration here, now.

Your building these and now also working on a second pair is itself a much appreciated complement to all those who have contributed to AK's E'Wave adventure.... :thmbsp:

The DOT3'ed lansaloy foam doesn't disintegrate IME. The brake fluid appears to evaporate over the span of a year or so. The net result is that the surround becomes stiff again. An application of brake fluid softens them up for another year. I've got at least one pair of LE14s in Heath's version of the S99? with nearly 10 yrs of brake fluid on them. There's no evidence of foam breakdown. OTOH, a refoam is maintenance free for the next 20 yrs.

Attached are the photos of the completed pair and my first attempt at a crossover.

Awaiting the judges decision.

Thanks

Very nice work, George. That is the first pair finished and shown on this thread, since my one center speaker doesn't count as a pair.

If I get to vote, the 6 inch waveguide is fully affirmed as being suitable for EconoWaves. No changes are necessary to the crossover compensation at all. Plus it opens up a whole 'nother world of smaller cabinets that can be reclaimed by enterprising E"Wavers.

Thanks for making that apparent, George

Well, there it is, George, you're #1 Mini-Waver!

Your post reminds me that I never posted my original crossover layout:

Steve O gonna be an E'Waver? :thmbsp:

Yes, that's the plan. I've got most of the parts and am pondering the various pre-engineered box volume/tuning options for the LE14 that have been discussed here.

I got a pair of JBL T-80s for nothing that needed refoam. They had been used in the rear deck of a car, and the spiders had "set" at maximum inward excursion. They're actually JBL 116H-1, one of my favorite woofers, re-badged for the Car Audio market.

Shimming them forward for several months restored the voice coils to center, and after refoaming, they're playing quite nicely here, thank you.... :music:

The offset I noted in the LE14s referenced above is the result of surround design and alignment: the basic geometry of the surround, basket and cone is such that the cone is displaced inward. I'm pretty sure it's not the result of cone sag or anything like that.
