TT Clamp

OK I got a hocky puck now how do i make a TT clamp out of it? How do i get it to clamp on table ect.Thanks

I presume you would drill a hole in the exact center of the puck. Take out your drill bits and put one in your hand and then hover it above your spindle until you find one that matches the diameter of your spindle. Of course you don't want to make the hole larger than the spindle, a snug fit is best.
 
The point of having the pressure fit of a smaller-than-spindle-diameter hole is that once pushed down on the spindle, the record underneath it is subject to more peressure than simply the puck's weight.

There is some mechanical advantage in addition to the puck mass.
 
Drill a slightly undersized hole in the puck. A slight force fit causes the air to be driven out when the puck is pushed on and suction holds it in place. It doesn't exert a great deal of force, but it is a large improvement over no clamp.

If you have them, use calipers to measure the spindle diameter. If not, start with something like a 1/4" bit and do a test fit. If it doesn't push on, redrill with a slightly larger bit and test again until you get the right fit. I found a hole about 1/64" smaller than the spindle worked for me.
 
My Ariston spindle is a bit fatter than my Marantz's, Sony, Etc. I even have to occasionally file out the center hole of records to even play them on it <cringe>. Good thing they're mostly from the $1.00 bins. :yes:
 
I bought the Michell clamp on eBay and frankly other than the coolness factor. I don't really notice a lot of difference.

File them? Guess you got to do what you got to do, but that makes shivers go up my back! Try taking a sharpened pencil and inserting untill tight, turning back and forth. Sometimes that will ream the hole nicely.

Thanks RusselC, good idea, I was just looking for rough edges. Haven't seen any problem playing them on other tables. I was a bit worried about inducing a shift or something.
 
R2R Reel Holders as Record Clamps

Old R2R machines needed press on rubber clamps, to hold the reel down on the shafts of the machine. They were rubber, with a hole, and they fit by just stretching out as you press them on the shaft and compressing and staying on the shaft.

they fit TT center shafts nicely, hold down a warped record, go on easy, come off easy, and do not add any serious weight to your bearing or motor.

You can find them on ebay, usually in pairs. Look at pics there to get a better idea of what they are.

Avoid old dry stiff rubber. (a fathers advice to his child?)
 
I wouldn't think that they would couple the disk to the platter as well as even a puck tho. I have a bud that's a chemistry teacher and he was going to try and snag me some of the of the lab tube caps to try on my old akai X-100. I found the originals, and they seem to work more on a suction principle

It seems like it is usually just a little edge inside, I guess from where the disc was molded or stamped, sort of like casting flash on an engine block. The pencil usually smooths it away. guess it depends on how large your spindel is.

Hey Mushy if you havn't drilled the puck yet try a 17/64 bit I tried a 9/32 and it was just a tad on the loose side on the spindle of my Technics SL1100A so I tried a 17/64 and presto perfect fit. If your nervous about drilling and mucking it up try some old jar lids the plastic or metal ones that's what I did till I got it rite. :thmbsp:
