Need help setting up my home audio system

Hello to all. This is my first post as new user to the audiokarma forums. I appreciate any help that can be given regarding my current dilemma.

i currently have a LG LHB335 surround sound system. It has served me well and I have no complaints regarding the movie watching/music listening experiences I have had so far. However, a couple months ago I got my first turn table and have begun to build a record collection and the LG is certainly not up for the task. I purchased a preamp (not sure of the model at the moment) for my TT which is a technics sl-bd27 to hook up to the LG but there has been a very bad hum coming from the speakers all but a couple times when playing records. If there is a way to get rid of the hum with my current system than please let me know, otherwise im thinking of the following..

I am not sure if I should be getting rid of the LG altogether, and replace it with a receiver that can play my music and just get a separate blu-ray player for movies. I am also questioning whether i should be getting a receiver with a phono input, or if i should get a receiver and a separate preamp. I would like the best sound I can get while keeping within my budget. Also, if i got rid of the LG system in place of a new receiver, would i be able to use the LG speakers for the new system or should i get new ones? my budget is $250ish dollars. im definitely open to any other ideas to get me what i want.

Is the TT grounded?
There should be a wire that looks like it has a antenna connector that plugs into the TT and the other end is connected to the receiver's ground.
 
Is there a common household wire that I can use as a substitute for this or am I going to have to make a run to Radio Shack?
 
should i get one that has this type of end to it? also, do i need to solder it to the turn table? and if i do, what is the best place to solder the wire to? Thanks in advance!

Look on the back of the TT, close to the RCA jacks, you should see where a ground wire plug's in.

Then look on the back of your receiver, there should be a screw or screw down type post that says ground, or show's the ground icon.

I'll take a pic of my TT and receiver, it'll show what i'm trying to type LoL.
 
Here's some pic's.
The receiver in these pic's don't have a chassis ground, which is weird since it has a phono input, but what do you expect from jvc? me? not much LoL.
Anyway, you can try a antenna ground on the receiver like whats in the pic's, or any screw holding the case together should work as well.
As far as soldering a ground wire on the TT,
If you have the ground connection like on mine, but can't find the proper wire, i'm sure you can open the TT up and solder a wire to the ground port.
Then connect the other end to the receiver of course LoL.
Should work fine this way, if you have to go that route.

thanks bad400 for the pics and the advice. im currently on track to do as you had advised. Can you take a look at what i'm dealing with though. there is an input for the grounding wire but since i dont have the right cord I'm going to have to solder it. Only problem is I dont know where. I dont think i can solder inside of this input. do you know the best place i should solder the wire in the turntable. I tried to take pictures to show the whole underbelly of my turntable so you can get an idea of where the best place might be. again, thanks for the help!

Wow, was this like that when you got it? the ground post wasn't inside anywhere?
I'll open my TT up and see where the ground terminates, i'll take a couple pics.
I can't believe the spot where the ground port is open and empty.
Usually if the ground was never ran, the port would still be sealed off.
And the ground wasn't flopping around inside the TT anywhere?
Doesn't matter really at this point i guess LoL.

Ok, see if this help's.
Look's like the tonearm/stylus is ground in the same spot.
As you can see, the plate is above/below the audio out jacks.

thanks for the help and the photos. first thing i saw was the green (im assuming) ground wire that you have and i dont. if yours connects to the arm and stylus than i suppose i will look for a good place to soder my wire in that area. also, the TT didnt come that way. i took it apart and played with it to see if i could find where the ground wire should be connected. i'll post some pics when its put back together and let you know of my resolution. will have time to work on it today or tomorrow. thanks again for helping a novice learn his way around a turntable.

I would expect that if it were indeed a grounding problem it would happen all the time.
 
there were times when the hum wasnt bad, but it wasnt nonexistent. It was just more silent then it is now. The last few times its been unbearable. another question, would a bad preamp contribute to the hum? when i get home later i'll post the model number of my preamp. i got it used at a music store and it has 4 channels (3 work), and it has a switch board to adjust the hi's, low's, mid's, gain, volume, and a couple other knobs i forget at the moment. im going to work on this all tonight with the hopes that i'll be jamming to some Queen before bedtime. :music:
 
Before doing any internal work on your stuff, I'd be looking very carefully at that preamp. Considering your current receiver, you might want to think about replacing it with something more basic like this to get your feet wet in the world of vinyl.

If that doesn't cure it, there's a problem with your turntable.
 
thanks markw. ive been thinking about doing what you advised for a few weeks now but was sure of the grounding issue being the catalyst so i never pulled the trigger. i just bought the preamp you recommended and will see how it sounds when i plug that in. should be here by friday. if that doesnt make anything better than its time to fix the grounding on the turntable.

Mine would hum sometimes, others it didn't.
I had not used mine in so long, i forgot it actually had a ground wire.
I then ask here on the forums and someone mentioned the ground, i remembered i was using it as a FM antenna LoL.
After i connected the ground wire all ways good.

Where is the actually ground pin that goes in the hole next to the audio jacks?
I understand you took it apart, but the hole is empty and should look like mine.
If there was never a ground ran, that hole would not be open.

My pre-amp/external dac has a ground post on it as well for the TT.
I still believe the hum is a ground issue.
 
Like I said earlier, if it were a ground to amp issue it would be a consant hum. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

I think the hum has been there all along according to the OP.

I think it would be a constant level, too. I really didn't think i'd have to specify that.

Have you had experience in this area, or are you just playing word games here?

Let's see what happens when he gets a known working phono pre, shall we?
 
No word games here, just speaking from a similar experience with a "floating" ground issue on a Numark mixer/turntable combo. TT wasn't grounded properly internally much like the OP's. The noise kept getting progressively worse over time and eventually just became a loud unbearable hum. I'm an electrons flow from negative to positive guy so that's where I started diagnosing the issue.
