So there I was, making the TS rounds, taking most of the knowledge I've learned here in the past two months. I stopped into the fourth last one of the day, one I hadn't been to in a while because it's a bit far away from the others. As I walked into the door, on the left I saw two rather big speakers with the grills leaning against them. I pulled one back and saw HPM-900 staring at me. The surrounds were gone on both, but sadly, one of the brittle (carbon fiber??) woofer cones was broken. Of course, my heart was still beating much faster.
I pushed my luck walking further in...Soundesign, RCA, etc....then a pair of Genesis 110s, excellent cond. but for the surrounds & one 2" grill tear. Neither pair were marked with the price. I went up to the front and asked the guy for the prices. He told me, "I'll have to ask the owner about those..." My heart sank a little. But then she came out and looked at the HPMs, recognizing that the one woofer was eff'ed. She said, "This must be your lucky day. I'll give them to you for $5 apiece." Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I then took her over to the Genesis pair. She looked at them for a few seconds and quoted the same price.
So $20 and 4 speakers later, I'm euphoric. I haven't tested or cleaned them yet, but I'll post some pics later. Should I even hook up the HPM with the blown woofer? Also, do I need to do any kind of electrical testing before hooking them up to the HK 430? (I don't have a multimeter) Finally, are HPM-900s too much speaker for my receiver?
Thanks a bunch to everyone who's helped me out. I couldn't have done it without you.
