Best japanese Speakers?

Hello everybody,

I'm having an opportunity to get some vintage speakers from Japan. I bet the best thing will be to look for those, made by japanese manufacturers...
I know Japan was pretty good at making amps, now what about speakers?

Which of japanese older speakers you can name the best?

Depending on what you mean by "older" there are Yamahas NS, Pioneer HPM/SX, Sansui SP's, Coral, Sony, Realistic, etc. to name a few.
Also how big, 2,3,4 or 5 way, price......there are a LOT of variations!

By older I mean "before" 1989..

How big, well doesn't matter...

Price.. somewhere about under $2000 a pair... Ebay price

Yamaha NS1000, Technics SB7000, JVC SK1000... many more other I am sure..

Thanks,

Off of the top of my head...

...let's see now. Japanese speakers, eh? Well, Yamaha NS-2000's would be hard to beat.

Look for the flagship Diatone, Victor, and even Kenwood speakers...these would have been home-market only products that very rarely show their faces in North America!

The Diatone speakers (a division of Mitsubishi) were quite higly regarded, with some models being used by NHK as broadcast monitors...have fun with this!

Japanese speakers

I love my Mitsubishi Diatone 2S-305 speakers. These are the professional monitors redcoates7 mentioned. (The R305’s are the ones made for the NHK). I have a pair of each and they are the same speaker. They are large and weigh about 100 lbs. each. I think they were made for about 30 years and discontinued around 1990. The only other Diatones I have heard are the DS500’s. These are bookshelve speakers. I bought a pair to use as surround speakers and the type of sound is very much like the 2S-305’s. I would certainly look into Diatones.

Hi-Fi Do is a good source for used Japanese speakers. Check out their web site (in English):

http://www.hifido.co.jp/indexe.html

You can search for the brand of your choice and see what they have. You can also search in past items to see what they have sold in the past. This is a good way to see what exists and see the prices. This is the only place I have found that will ship to the US. The small speakers were inexpensive and were shipped by the Japanese postal service. It took about six weeks and they were beautifully packaged. Large speakers require air shipment and dealing with customs. In other words, you have to really want them.

Pioneer Exlcusive made some of the very best speakers using TAD drivers...TAD still runs too.

Yamaha speakers...

GOTO and ALE now make the very best speakers in japan. Kondo/YL Acoustic used to make very high quality horn speakers but now are as rare as hens you know whats.

best japanese speaker brand??

Diatone!!!

at the second place is JVC/ Victor with the model Zero L-10 perhaps it is very similar to the Yamaha GF-1

japan was capable of producing amazing stuff . even Sanyo,Sharp, Sankyo, and
other seemingly goof brands were certainly capable of making top-notch equipment.
it is much more difficult to design something profitable than something good.

from an engineering standpoint, it's a lot more difficult to make a $3 tweeter than a
$70 tweeter. if sanyo/fisher has a market to sell $3 tweeters @10000 pairs, or $70
tweeters @ 7 pair.... which is k-mart going to promote?

back to the OP, yes , TAD has to be among the best japan has to offer....then again , look at all
the stuff not exported from japan...the yamaha, pioneer ,kenwood/trio...., even sansui... some amazing
over-engineered ,over the top stuff.
