Bi-amp 4400 updated to Bi-Wired...
TRY 1: So a while back I started bi-ampping my 4400... Seeing it has four amps. I picked up an active crossover and rewired my speakers... Well I did not really like the results.... and it was too much effort tuning it with the active crossover with the amp in 4 channel mode..... way too many knobs...
TRY 2: So Friday night I gave it another try with just the 4 amps in the 4400, using the front/rear tone controls on the pre-amp section of the 4400 and a spare set of identical crossovers...and no active crossover. I just used the woofer output of the extra crossovers. Sounded nice.... but did not bowl me over.....
TRY 3: So with the woofers still wired separately to the extra crossovers and wired back to the amp.... I put the amp into 2 channel mode and hooked up the woofers to the remote outputs and left the Midranges & tweeters on the main outputs.... This means that the woofers have their own 12 gauge wire pair / output relays / crossover and so do the mid/tweeters for each of the two channels....
WOW on try 3...ITS A KEEPER. I know this is not bi-ampped.... More like bi-wired..... But this really made the best improvement.... The clarity, depth and separation improved dramatically through out the freq range.... I don't think this is due to dirty output relays as I cleaned them very completely/carefully a few weeks back.
I just think separating the current load of the highs/lows and the extra current capacity of the extra wires/relays provides for better dampening & transient response.
Anyone else try and see this?
