Some interesting 60's? speakers I picked up...

I picked these up on craigslist today. They were listed at $10 but the guy just gave 'em to me. They're big and square with casters to roll them around on. The tweeters are mounted over the ~13" woofers. They definitely look like a DIY job. They don't sound so good though...

I opened them up to see what was inside, and found a huge Utah driver. The connections go straight to the RCA jack on the back of the cab.

So...are these any good? If so, what's causing them to sound so..muffled? I was powering them with a ~30WPC Denon reciever.

On the back of the cab: "John Muska Co". On the woofer cone: 106753-2. On the woofer frame: G15P5.

Two questions:

Are the tweeters working?

Why the heck is there a port tube and a big rectangular hole in the baffle? :scratch2: Perhaps this hole was for an optional horn and should have been covered up?
 
I believe the tweeters work, yes. Am I 100% sure, no. I was thinking horns as well, but there are no screw holes on the inside or outside showing that there might have originally been some there.
 
Those cabinets look pretty nice. It's a shame they don't sound too good. The boxes might be good for a DIY project using the Utahs as the core of the project.
 
To check if the tweeter is working,use a toilet paper roll up against it and to your ear.
It could also be that the caps need replacing.

Actually, I was hoping to use these as guitar amps.
 
I'm using a 10" Utah Alnico (Jensen clone) as a guitar speaker right now, in a home-built 1 x 10 cab...sounds pretty decent to me.
Yeah, check to see of the tweeter are working?
If they, then replace the cap ASAP, then give it a listen?

Where and how are those tweeter wires connected? Trace them through the back.

Originally, there was a tweeter where the round port is.

Looks like one of these JBL cabs, or clones thereof:

Tipoff is the covered crossover hole on the back.

Are there legs on those, or evidence there once were?

On the longer or the shorter side?

Check the dimensions against that drawing, please.

There's evidence of legs on the bottom. I'm guessing these were clones. I'll take a look at the tweeter connections and dimensions later today.
 
Back then there were custom cabinet boulders that would build what you ordered with what drivers you wanted. I doubt many were Speaker builders as such, just a cabinet maker making a buck. Some would make a boutique speaker for furniture stores to sell and were not concerned with how they sounded only how they looked. The average person had no clue about quality sound, just wanted the box to fit the decor. (The more things change the more they stay the same some ways...)

It might be a copy as mentioned, but it goes look like one of those ports should have had another driver in it, but the buyer may have gone on the cheap and ordered it without.

Checking the “cap” means Capacitor, this would be used to separate the highs and lows between the woofer and tweeter. Any cap that old is likely dead.

"Bottom" like mine are set up, or in the horizontal orientation?

It matters with respect to what's appropriate to load in them....
