The Dynaco A-25 was maybe the most popular speaker sold in America in the formative days of stereo. Maybe in the world. Greg Dunn's unoffial Dynaco site lists the sales of A-25's as being greater than 600,000. For a small bookshelf speaker it sounds tremendous. And they are quite often found at thrift shops for $5 to $10. Even on E-Bay, the average price seems to be about one hundred dollars.

I gave away a pair recently to my local bewpub, and when I drink beer there, I can enjoy the music on a great little pair of speakers. Still have two pairs, and would consider buying another, if the price was right.

I measured some speakers today on my Real Time Analyzer, and thought the A-25's might be of interest to some of the Dynaco lovers here. Here are pix of the pair measured, and the corresponding FR. And this pair has been refinished on the outside, but have never been opened. Recapping the crossovers would undoubtedly help, but why fix it if it ain't broke? Just goes to prove that dynamite indeed does come in small packages.

I agree with you 100 percent. The Dynaco A-25's are a awesome set of speakers for both the price, size and sound. I have a complete Dynaco setup with the Dynaco ST-70 amp, PAS-3 preamp, FM-3 stereo tuner and A-25 speakers.

The Dynaco A-25s were good no doubt, but there were as good or better in the same approximate price range (adjusted for inflation). To wit; ADC 303ax, AR 4x, A/D/S 720 and 520.

Maybe try both horizontal like Dynaco suggested, and vertical, tweeter to tweeter.... :yes:

Are referring to something Dynaco published about stacking them? I'd love to see the doc if you have a copy...
 
A25's

From a big JBL fan, this is a big compliment.

Dynaco A-25's are very nice speakers in a compact enclosure.

I once had a pair of A-35's and liked them as well.

Hey, Steve, great to hear from you. I still have most of that blue JBL grille cloth you sold me, just waiting for the proper place to put it. I bought a pair of L55 Lancers, and plan to make a pair of "4414's" out of them. Just bought a pair of 104H's and 035Ti's today. Can't wait to hear them. If they sound as good as I imagine, you can bet they will covered with Steve Gonzales's blue cloth.

The car in the background is a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda that was restored by Bob Riggle who runs a Barracuda called Hemi Under Glass at NHRA drag races. The HUG car is a quarter mile wheel stander, which is pretty impressive to see.

The Dynaco A-25's are so nice for their size. Someday I will open them and recap the crossover. But they sound so sweeeeet as is.

Ditto Jack. I am very familiar with Hemi Under Glass, it is a legend in racing circles. I just watched a 1/4 mi. wheel-stander competition on SPEED CH. or something, I remember seeing the original 'standers as a kid. Being from Bakersfield, we always had the Big Boys show up for the famous "March Meet". Do you recall "The Little Red Wagon"? Anyway, glad to see that you're still experimenting with JBL stuff. AK is a great place to share. None of the, uh, umm, problems that plagued me in the past. At least not so far. Super-fine group of audio buffs here, I love it. It is one of the few sites that I actually do not mind donating $$ to. I can't wait to see some pictures of your modded L55's.

In response to several inquiries here, I recently did some measurements on stacked 4412s, illustrating the consequences of the Dynamax stacking scheme.

You've posted your curves characterizing the A-25 frequency response. I'm asking you to stack the pair playing the same source (mono) through both of them simultaneously, and re-measure, with your mic on axis with either of the tweeters, under the same conditions. It'd be good the see what happens in each of the several possible configurations, i.e., horizontal, woofers in line, woofers opposite, and vertical, tweet to tweet, woof to woof.

I'll not link to my results until after your measurements are complete, so as not to prejudice your findings.... :thmbsp:

IIRC, the AR-4x also sold something in the region of 600,000 units... I don't have any documentation on hand for that figure, but I can remember reading it either here, or at Classic Speaker Pages.

Happy to see you aboard, you're a breath of fresh air. It's about time someone put this "stacking" mystery to rest. I fully agree with your views and happy you can back them up with what "non-believers" always demand, which is data. You have done this site a tremendous favor in dismissing the benifits of stacking, there are none whatsoever.

What you are doing is crucial in bringing listeners closer to what this hobby is all about: listening to music!
