They were in the employee donation area, If no one wants them, there mine.

Found a pair of Wharfedale W60Ds here locally. The cabinets are very rough but the drivers all looked good. Got them home and found that one tweeter and one mid are dead. Doing an AK search found that these “Purple Donut” tweeters are prone to failure but I was surprised to find one of the mids toasted too. The tweets have huge magnets, it's a shame it doesn't work.

that's what I was thinking as on reading other threads it's seems that the tweeters in these are susceptible to getting "fried", though there were never any pics

The bass can sound a little too "flat" for most folks, but after you listen
to them for a while, that won't bother you at all (at least that's what I
found from my pair). :thmbsp:

I've got a pair of similar looking new Wharfedale tweeters aroung here somewhere, I'll dig them up if you want to compare them.

huh? Those are NOT Advent tweeters. Don't even look like them at all. Anyway i have two sets of these W60's and think they are very nice speakers. I like them more than my KLH 17's, AR2ax's, Large Advents and several other speakers I own. Underrated for sure. A stack of them is a wonderful thing as well. Don't overpower them as they will not handle a lot of power / volume but other than that are VERY well built with cast frame drivers, very nice cabs and sand filled rear baffles. I like Wharfedales. BTW, i think those purple tweeters are real good.

The cone shape is what is called a fried egg. The original Kloss designed Advent tweeter and the purple Wharfedale cones have the same shape and based on design on production dates it appears that Henry may have done a bit of copying. If you remove the plastic piece in front of the later tweeter shown in the above photo and you'll see the fried egg cone and then compare it to the original Advent design. AFAIK, the 2 companies were the only to employ the shape. KBott's tweeters are a dome. Without pullinmg 1 and looking at the mfr code hard to say who made them but with the opague dome probably not Philips that had 1 of the best.

My first REAL speaker set was an early pair of W-60's...2 way. I dearly miss them:tears:

Found a ratty pair on the side of the road 5 yrs ago. One bad woofer and open non polar capacitors. Replaced the above and repaired the cabinets from the moisture damage. Made a nice sounding speaker. Gave them to a friend. Sounds great in her livingroom.
Yours look much nicer than the pr I found. If mine had been that nice I'd still have them! I remember seeing them In the Allied Catalogs as a kid. Thats how I knew they were Wharedales!! Great score:thmbsp:

what a coincidence. I bought a pair of W60D's out of a pawn yesterday, along with a Rotel RC-1090 pre, a Carver TFM-15CB power amp and a pair of Kef Q30 speakers. I was looking for the Wharfedales to replace the mids in my teak Kowloon Wharfedales (see thread). The cabs on these are pretty scruffy, but all the drivers work. I'm amazed at how good they sound. I weighed one and they're 47 lbs each. It's distracting to pick up a speaker and feel sand shifting around inside. It's difficult to get the mid and tweet balance right because the pots on the back will adjust all the way from 'too much' to 'off". See photos. I think I'll take the mids out and study the cone surrounds. I just need to replace the surrounds in the mids and tweets on my other speakers. I can duplicate this surround (which is fabric and not rotted) and I'll be good to go. Some time. I've bought 7 pairs of speakers in the last 2 weeks and more are coming. I passed on a pair of Kef 103.3 w/Kube at the same pawn. Anybody wants those they're in Lansing, MI.

Cool, now I know how much each one of mine ways (The drivers in those JBL 4412's in the other thread must be heavy as hell for those cabs to be 60lbs each - unless I was misreading it).
