Folded bass horns get really big when you start finishing them. This is the first of probably 7 coats of Formby's Tung Oil. I blacked out the part of the cabinet behind the grill with flat black spray. The grills are made out of a reproduction Fender style "wheat" (hey I'm in Kansas).:D I'm trying to get things a little more presentable around the old homestead in anticipation of the March 15th get-together.:banana: Hopefully I will get the second one started tomorrow and another coat on this one. I use 0000 steel wool between coats followed with a tack rag.:yes:


BTW, the Missus is letting me do it in the kitchen because I told her if I got the finish on them, I might sell'em.:smoke:

Jay, I'm tellin' you... 24 coats of Tung is enough. No more. :D

I like the "blackout" behind the grill cloth.
 
They're Eminence, but I can't remember the model, Paul??? I built these with Paul's guidance over a year ago and am just now getting the Tung on them. I just checked the one I did last night, and it sucked up every morsel of oil.:sigh: Looks like I have my work cut out for awhile (but it's a labor of love).:yes:
 
The woofer is the Eminence Gamma-15. That's a nice 15" woofer that works great in this application. The Gamma-15 does not have a big resonant breakup peak in the 1500 - 2000 hz range like many other 15" woofers, and crossing over low avoids a problem altogether.

Jay has Altec 511b horns which he stacks on topo, equipped with, I think, Altec 902 drivers crossed at 500 hz.

He's pushing these with some low power tube amps. The very high efficiency of the whole system works well with those amps, so he is not lacking for realistic volume. And to quote Jay, "They go so LOW!!!"

Jay, my experience with birch veneer ply and tung is about 8 - 10 coats will do it.

I can tell you for absolute certain (without even asking!) that the kitchen finishing station would not ever (no, Never! :no:) be allowed in my house...

I've cleaned fish in the sink too, but my best all time amazing feat was when I butchered a deer in there. Bless her heart , she even helped with the deer.:thmbsp:

My wife makes only the odd comment about the size and the volume of stereo gear about the house but she absolutely HATES the small of oil-based wood-finishing products. Nope, never, NEVER any oil-based wood-finishing products used in the kitchen! If we don't eat it, I can't do it in her kitchen.

That said, I've never brought a deer home and tried to dress and butcher it ! !

It might qualify technically but, man, I wouldn't put money on it.
 
Very nice, Jay. Did you have to strip them or were they unfinished when you started?

As far as a kitchen finishing station...I don't even need to ask. :nono:
If I took the approach that it's easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission...well, no, I'm not even gonna go that route. :nono:
