New Speakers in Da' House- JBL S2600

I've had Klipsch Cornwalls with Al K XO's for about 3 years now and been pretty happy with them but of course, wanted even better. I like the dynamics of horns so it had to be that AND it had to fit in a space - no bigger and preferably even a little smaller than the Cornwalls. I've been considering JBL L300s and so had been keeping an eye out for JBLs for sale. I happened upon a pair of NIB! JBL S2600 speakers. The guy selling them had been dealing JBLs and had them in storage (I'd love to get in his storage!). The speakers were mostly made for and sold in the Japanese market in the mid 90's. Some were also sent to Europe and a very few pair made it to the US. I had never heard a pair but read some reviews including the fact that it won Japan's Golden Sound Award. I took a leap and bought them on faith (where would I ever hear an S2600?) figuring I could resell if they didn't beat the Cornwalls handily. Well, the Cornwalls are sold and the JBLs are staying. What impresses me the most about them?

1. Articulate, controlled, deep bass....and I thought the Cornwalls had nice bass but these are definitely better.

2. HUGE soundstage. I mean huge... There is a sweet "spot" almost the size of the room.

At first the highs weren't hugely engaging..a little laid back for me...but then Klipsch are known for being forward and I had been listening to them for quite a while. I'm guessing that there are a few things going on - crossovers and drivers breaking in and me becoming used to the sound - but it's getting even sweeter/more coherent in the highs/mids and can the bass actually be getting ever better!? I'm a happy camper.

The speakers are right and left/mirror imaged.

Very nice find! I'd love to hear a pair of those some day.

I'd agree the tweets on the Cornwall are usually very forward... to the point of being painfull at high volumes.

WOW......those are sweeeeeeeeeeeet.. i hate to ask, but, how much? are those home speakers or were they made for PA type application? enjoy. i am happy for you.

regards

Thanks for all the compliments. These speakers were meant for the home market - that home market being Japanese audiophiles. I really did love my Cornwalls but these JBLs got the :thmbsp:

Congratulations! Those look like beauties. I've always like the tight bottom end of the JBLs.

I bet they sound really great with all those tubes!

Very cool and I do like mirror imaged JBL two way speakers with horns. :D Do you have a link or what are the specs on them? How big are they? Congratulations. :thmbsp: And you sure are on an upgrade roll at the moment. :music:
