Altec Model 14 score.

After many months, I snagged a pair of Altec 14s that I'd been hoping to get. Long story, but I finally got them today! I was expecting them to be beat, maybe abused -- who knows? The fellow had them stored pretty nicely in a garage, and first glance as we stacked them in my car was promising. I gave the fellow 48 beers as payment, we shook hands, and that was that. :thmbsp:

Got them home to have a closer look, and wow, these are beauties! Some oil and a bit of detailing, lots of spider web removing, and they look nearly perfect. The veneer on these is in amazing shape, no scratches, dings or rings on top. Pretty happy with these -- all the drivers are original and test good. I'll have the woofers refoamed on the weekend, so I can give these a spin and hear what they can do.

Any current thoughts on the 14s? I've always wanted some 19s, but have never seen any locally. Have any of you tried any mods for this speaker? Zilch, where are ya? :D

Those cabs are gorgeous:jawdrop:

The Model 14's have a nice horn and punchy bass, let us know your thoughts after the foam goes in.

Nice Score!!!

I think the asymmetric MantaRays are especially cool, and am working with BMS drivers on them here. I'll test them with Selenium D220Tis and 902s also, and may be trying some in JBL C36 Viscount cabinets soon. They solve the "Plays to yer knees" problem common to many vintage designs.

The woofers are a mystery. Nobody seems to know even a model number for them, let alone T/S parameters. I'm gonna rely on your evaluation of those.... :thmbsp:

Well Done! I love those beasts! Beautiful cabinets -- let's see some pics after you do the refoaming.

I like the 19's a little better, only because they're bigger!

If they're working properly, there are no mods necessary for the 14. Re-foam and enjoy.:thmbsp:

A PM to the Sansui forum moderator Morden2004, can likely put you on the trail of correct foams for the woofers. I believe he is still very much enjoying his 14's along with several other members here.

Don't quote me on this, but i think member Richard C has significant knowledge of the 14 and the three variations of crossover that were used in the model 14.

You'll enjoy your 14's, in a typical room in the average home, i like them much better than 19's. The 14 bass is robust, and while maybe not quite as detailed as the 416 bass of the mod 19, it's more authoritative and extends perceivably lower.

Just my .02 y'all understand.........................

Very nice, indeed!
Was the beer imported or domestic? LOL :D

I'm sorry I let a inexpensive pair slip through my fingers. Though not nearly as nice and certainly not as inexpensive as the pair you'll soon be enjoying!

I couldn't agree with you more. The 14's are on my holy grail list to be sure.

Gorgeous speakers and an unheard of price...you gotta love that!

I have a good friend in Tempe that has a pair of 14's run off of a McIntosh 2300 that he wouldn't trade for anything. I think he's had those speakers for at least 12 years and I know they've moved from Little Rock to Arlington to Tempe. He love's em.

Awesome score!

Excellent score, big congrats! :thmbsp: I think you owe it to yourself to listen to them awhile stock, then recap, then you'll be ready to really appreciate an upgrade to the BMS drivers.
