I couldn't find any info on this, but i thought the late H.E Emims - used in Ren. and late IRS series- were all the same as Infinity uses the same part number on these. I removed them from my Ren.80s to check and replace the gray foam in the back and compared them to those in my Sigmas. Almost identical, except the back of the Ren. Emims have a black semi-transparent cloth inside, covering the back openings and magnets. In the Sigmas you can see the back of the diaphragms which are yellow.
I wouldn't mind the cloth if it didn't change the freq. response of the Emim. I connected them straight to the amp with a 50uf protection cap, and played some music at low levels. The Emim without the cloth went lower in bass, but reach its excursion limits (buzzed) long before the one with the cloth. It seems to me that the cloth acts like a filter at lower frequencies, limiting excursion and protecting the diaphragm. But at the crossover frequency (about 600Hz) maybe bass response is not needed anyway, so I'm wondering why they removed the cloth in the later models, since it doesn't seem to affect the mids and highs. Any thoughts?
