Dual 1228 glow lamp

Hello,
I'm new here.

well for a while my turntable has been out of commission (Dual 1228 for like 4 years) and I have reached the final issue.

I need a new glow lamp for the strobe but I cannot find it anywhere.

where can I get one?

I had a Dual 1225 for about a zillion years... didnt have a strobe lamp.

Would a standard NE-2 work there? I have a Benjamin Miracord 50H that uses a neon lamp for the speed indicator that was out when I got it. The above lamp brought it back to life.
 
I imagine there will be someone who knows the specific bulb or a substitute that is cheaper than this, but turntableexperts.com has

sometimes being sure that the contacts are clean where the bulb makes contact can make a difference too.

I'm looking forward to learning if there is a cheaper solution in case I ever need one.

my father and I actually tried to order that one but he is out of stock.
 
I'm just gonna say, anyone here have a glow lamp like his they are willing to sell me?

I heard that you can use any neon bulb as long as it is connect to the same power source as the turntable

has anyone here bought a generic neon bulb and used resistors to modify the circuit so that it would work in the Dual?
 
You could switch to LEDs. I would go with a pair wired parallel opposing, so one always lights on either phase of the AC line. The series resistor must be recalculated, and you're likely to need higher wattage as well. 8.2K is about right for 20mA peak in the LEDs. It will dissipate less than 2W, but I suggest a 5W resistor to keep surface temperature down.

I haven't actually tried this. There's a possibility that you would lose some of the strobe effect. If so, it might be necessary to complicate things with a zener diode or some other arrangement (mask one LED?) to prevent light output for part of the AC line cycle.

I didn't know you could use LEDs

can you elaborate more on this idea?
also how would I go about calculating the resistance?
what circuit do I need to analyze?
where do I connect my multimeter to the TT?
 
I think the voltage would be 110 or 220 depending on where your at. I have fixed several Marantz and couple Duals (Although not a 1228) by using a generic NE-2 from Radioshack. it was like $3 and admittedly it was a little dimmer than the OEM on my Marantz, it worked just fine for functional purposes. I have heard various things about resistors etc, but I have never done anything but just wire it in and use it. The quote I got for OEM on my Marantz was $50 and I like $3 much much better.
 
LED no workee...gotta have that AC flicker in a neon for the strobe to work. NE-2H is a high-brightness version that would eliminate the problem of a NE-2 being somewhat dimmer than the original.

Sometimes on Duals, if the bulb is not broken a good cleaning on the ends and connections, has brought many back to life again.
 
the bulbs that I posted in the ebay auction in fact do work perfectly, they had to be soldered into place on both my 1228s but they work none the less
