EV Electrovoice Interface Speakers - superdome tweeter foam surrounds

Gogas

Vintage EV Fanatic
Hi,

It's my first post. Hi all and thanks for having me...

I own EV interface A series 3 with EQ , EV interface 2 series 2 and EV interface 3 series 1 speakers, A nice HK 7.1 surround processor and an array of Rotel amps.

I love the vintage EV series and have noted some many posts by many of you on such speakers. Still keeping a keen eye out for Interface D's somewhere if they were to come up here in Australia.

Anyway, the point of the post, is I have come across supplies of the original, err.. well original spec superdome tweeter 2 part foam surround kits that suit many of the EV range of speakers. I noticed quite a few people had been searching for them.

I'd like to re open the forum discussions for vintage EV series speakers and hear what everyone has to say about their personal experiences good or bad and if anyone is chasing the superdome foam surrounds I can hopefully help you source them.

I look forward to further discussions.

Cheers

GG

Finally! Electrovoice tweeter foam replacement interface series

Hi there. this is also my first post.

I have two pairs of Electrovoice interface 2 series 2 speakers i have been chaseing the foams for the tweeters (HF drivers) for sometime. I have contacted Electro-voice about them and they tell me it is a discontinued item.

So i am interested in the foams for my interface2 series2 E.V's please contact me to discuss. I am new to A.K so will see if i can find how to contact you myself...

Thanks all for your excellent posts, have enjoyed reading all the information about so many different speakers and peoples opinions...

John McPeak at MSound has the super dome foam kits as well. I found his shipping pretty reasonable and his knowledge of EV ingeneral very good!

Nice work.

The two suppliers that I found in Australia were:

(a) direct from Bosch in Northmead, Sydney (Bosch now own EV)

Inner foam (part #70534) $10.82 each ex GST

Outer foam (part #70604) $9.24 each ex GST

One inner and one outer foam required per tweeter.

(b) Speakerbits in Melbourne - $40.62 PER SPEAKER!!

I went for MSound in the USA as per Skippy124's link to my refoam thread. Much cheaper. He also supplies the appropriate fillet-less woofer surrounds for the EV 8" woofer. Very happy with the cost and his customer service.

I'm reasonably happy with my EV Interface 1's. They do sound quite forward in the midrange and a bit nasal overall, and not as smooth as my other speakers (they sounded this way in standard form and also after recapping the crossover). I really want to love them as they took some time and effor to restore, but I think I love my restored Energy ESM-2 speakers more.

I also contacted Msound (very helpfull) and he said since i need at least 2 sets and i also have a pair spare set of tweeters. so possibly 3 sets total he gave me the part numbers and suggested bosch america (ev) where he gets them from. I contacted them and they sent me an email saying contact our australian company. so i did that. they say contact america... so australian bosch very unhelpfull also told me a few years ago the part is discontinued and is no longer made.. tried to tell me the same thing this time as well. as I said VERY unhelpfull.. havn't tried speaker bits will try them despite the price you say... and gogas was very helpful when i contacted him. seems to know his stuff when it comes to electro voice interface series. he is also in melbourne, close enough to me... I have always trusted total recoil in melbourne to fix my speakers but they have never been able to find the foams either.

thanks for your reply it was very helpfull. Johno

I've been just cutting out my own foams from a room air conditioner filter, seems to work fine. I love my Interfcae "D's", the tweeters are from the "C's". :D

Hmmm... when you contacted EV/Bosch, did you provide the exact part numbers that I mentioned above? If not, they often will not take the time to help you out. Also, it is suggested that you ask for the foam lenses for the EV Sentry 100A, as they are the exact same surround and it would seem that the Sentry 100A often appears on their parts lists in Australia, whilst the Interface does not.

Send an email to:

Michael.Davidson@au.bosch.com

and quote the part numbers in my post above, and he will help you out. That's your cheapest option in Australia.

Hope that helps!

The foam lenses actually are two piece and use two very different thickness and densities of foam. They appear considerably 'denser' than air conditioner filter material. Whilst it would be better than using nothing at all, I'd imagine that the end result would be noticeably different than EV originally intended.

The foam lenses are dirt cheap in the US... it would be well worth buying the real thing if you can manage it.

It is refreshing to see info on these speakers. My first "real" speakers were EV Interface 1 Series II that I bought around 1982 ($217 pr.) I threw away the woofers years ago when the foam went bad. An Aker sold me a new pair of original (refoamed) woofers, and they are on the way.

I will check into a recap since it has been well documented (with pics) on another thread.

I would like to get the foam lenses too, but I am not ready to spend $42 for foam. I must have missed something...Where are these "dirt cheap" lenses you refer to?

Thank you.

Very nice!

I've got some recap pics/info in the thread that skippy124 linked to earlier in this thread.

Regarding the foam lenses, 'dirt cheap' might have been somewhat of an exaggeration... they are, however, much cheaper from EV in the USA compared to sourcing them in Australia (from EV/Bosch or otherwise). I quoted AUD$41 (about $AUD45 including taxes when sourced from EV/Bosch over here) + postage costs on top of that. You can get them for much less in the US.

In addition, if you a search for 'ev foam' on ebay, you will find them for $USD25 + postage for a pair (Sentry 100A's use the same tweeter as the Interface Series II speakers... the kit I see listed refers to the 100A).

If you're going to the effort of replacing the woofers, you should really do the tweeter lenses too. EV have documented the reasons for the design of the tweeter and the foam lenses in their EDS documents for the Interface series. Refer to page 3 of the document in this link:

Somewhat of an exaggeration?....I can get potting soil at the dollar store for...well a buck. :D

Seriously, thank you pete mac for the info. My cabs are in great shape, and I will check out ebay. I find it hard to believe that these are still available. Must have had an overstock back in the day?

I never thought anything could sound better than my set up back in 1982. I had a Yamaha CR-640, Pioneer Pl-518, and the Interface 1s. Playing "Dangerous Type" by the Cars was heaven. I just bought a Yamaha CR-1040, so I'll have to see if I can get the same sound with my now 47 year old ears.

have bought more speakers and am going to need more foam surrounds, thank goodness for this thread because i couldn't find my previous emails to mick and bosch..

I have 2's and 3's and love them both. Need the correct tweeter foam so i can love them more.

rebuilt 3's...

I'm seriously thinking of putting my 3's drivers in a set of nice cabs (Realistic T100) and aligning the drivers

Tweeter foams are available through Speaker exchange. Not original but they look pretty good. $5-$9 each I believe.

Talked with Adam with the EV parts department yesterday and original foams are NLA..
