h/k 730: inside and out

I took some nudies of my h/k 730. I've done it for all the rest, so I figured "why not?"

I tried taking a close-up of my partial LED conversion too, but it is kind of fuzzy.

Another modification is the replacement of the volume knob with one for a Marantz. I still have the original knob; just wanted to see how it would look.

Also, this is the 100-240V international version (explaining the DIN tape jack, and voltage selector, as well as internal FM switch).

That sure is purty..After looking at it,I'm putting it on My list of must have receivers.Is the LED conversion difficult to do?

Not really. I use a full wave bridge rectifier and 1.5-volt power regulator: Just need to make sure the regulator is properly cooled.

Right now only the tuning needle, power button, and [Stereo] indicator (not on) are LED lit, and the 8V AC is fed through a resistor and then rectified. Using a resistor to drop the voltage instead of a regulator can result in dimming (sp?) when many LED's are used.

I've performed the full conversion on my 430, though. The hardest part is trying to diffuse the very directional light of LED's. I take a small acrylic cube and scuff up the side the LED is aiming at. It works pretty well, but you can still end up with some "hot-spots".

I wonder how LEDs would work with fiber optics? There shouldn't be any hot spots and the light should travel the entire length.
 
I love when AK members experiment. I tried green LEDs for the dial and red LEDs for the stero and in tune indicators in my Citation 18 tuner. I went back to lamps for the dial, but kept the LEDs for the indicators. The dial indicator is an easy one as well.

Kinda neat to see an offshore 730.

No, that was my 430, which is curiously an international version too! This one was originally bought by another person (an AK'er if I'm not mistaken) off of ebay but he was daunted by the repairs it would take to get it up and going. He offered to have it shipped to my house if I paid for it, which I did. It mostly needed pots cleaned and what not, but the worst thing was that the entire front had been shifted over from the right from some extreme impact, causing the right-side aluminum trim to bend, and it slightly crumpled the right side of the lower aluminum front. Two switches has to be replaced, and I had to bend back the aluminum trim bar. Unfortunately the lower-right portion of the face will still have the crease until I can find a replacement front. It is in otherwise perfect working condition now.

I believe LED's are used in most fiber optics. In I don't know if they are used in commercial fiber phone systems, but you can see them in use in nearly any optical out on a DVD or CD player.
