ADS L8-10s Trash or Treasure???

I found a pair of ADS L8-10 Speakers at the local thrift store for $24 so I took a chance and bought them. I'm only just now getting into vintage audio equipment, but these look so sweet! The cabinets are awesom and they have the metal clip-on front covers. I hooked them up today and they seem to perform great.

I know these are good speakers, but are they nice enough that I should sell them or keep them? How do they shape up to other ADS models and others by compeditors?

Really just wanting to milk the brains of people who know a lot more about this stuff than I. I look forward to hearing from you.

It all depends why your here,I thought I read sweet cabinets.I don't know much about ADS but a very rich high school friend ran them and his parents ran the original Fishers.Maybe the thought is this,are you after money or looking to preserve the past?If your after the past your in the right spot,there are members in this site that have more that 21 pairs of(maybe different) speakers, would that shock you?I think the bottom line at AK is help,console,berate,give **** when needed but at all costs keep the past intact or improve on it.Check the archives,ADS holds their own and if YOU like what you hear RUN with it.Gonzo

Trust your ears above all else....that said, ADS made very fine loudspeakers, and there are many ADS fans here. The last ADS speakers I remember hearing were their high-end car units, but even for cars their speakers were smooth and refined. I can't imagine their home speakers not living up to that standard and then some.

ADS was one of the premier speaker manufacturers of the late 70's and early 80's with designs and components that originally were from the West German Braun heritage. During my college years I had a set of L420 2 way and they were pretty nice in my smallish room. I still have them, although I haven't listened to them in quite some time and the drivers are probably in need of repair.

I would think you have a very nice set of late 70's 3 way ads speakers that would be worthy of restoration. I would think they would generally go for $250-$350 on the major auction site in good condition. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.
 
I saw your auction and couldn't believe the (low) price for ADS L810s. I've got a set of L-620s and L-520 (both two ways) and those would have made a nice addition. Somebody got a great deal.
 
a pair of L-810's in good working order and in decent cosmetic shape usually bring around $300 on eBay. yours looked to be in near pristine condition. with only $24 invested, i am curious to know why you sold them? you had a steal when you bought them. you got taken when you sold them.
 
Had a pair of L-810 IIs for over twenty years. Sold on eBay for over $400 with boxes and original stands.

Wonderful speakers. Sold to try something different.
 
hmmmm

i cannot believe how many times i've heard about someone finding a pair of L810's for pocket change .... or on a parking strip waiting to go to the dump.

i look for them everywhere and never see them ... highly disconcerting

Geez, I tried to give the guy a good answer, I would have grabbed them on ebay if I knew he was gonna throw em up there like that. Live and Learn.

That is an ultamate score on those ADS's, and I would keep those If I were you, and im sure your ears will tell you the same thing, ADS is one of the best speakers i've heard. the bird :thmbsp:
 
His ears told him they were good alright, but his wallet was shouting louder.

Dingus brought up a good point, someone who WANTS them is getting them. Too bad he's not getting them for $24 though.
 
You know there's an attitude I encounter sometimes....in gunshops...antique stores....car repair places...where the knowledgeable person remains standoff-ish or quietly superior and doesn't volunteer much informtion.
I think I know why they do that now. You never know when someone is going to take your knowledge that you've earned through study or experience (real effort) and just run with it to the dark side.

I think that's what happened here, even though I didn't contribute until now.
I feel used.
 
Brutal... Wow. If I were a speaker guru I wouldn't have asked. I sat down to up the price by $75 and they were gone. My bad. I hope the new owner enjoys them. Note there is another pair active right now for $119 with less than one day to go.
 
You know, guys. Don't forget that just because you all think I'm a dolt, remember that you're looking from your own narrow perspective. Let's say that you ran across a highly valuable old lamp or antique something or another. What would you do? Try to find and participate in a forum where you might learn something. I never had any interest other than making good money on these. I call $175 good money and I'm moving on. Note that I've also got an Electro-voice aristrocrat out there now with a $225 buy it now. You should love people like me because i'm out there searching the thrift stores and making this stuff availiable. If you didn't inform me when I need information, I might never go back and buy this stuff. I'm doing this communiy a favor when I find treasures and bring them to market. You're doing me a favor when you help be know what to look for. A symbiotic relationship if I ever saw one!
