Advent (Utility??) score at thrift. Not sure what to do...

Mike Bama

More volume, please!
I bought these for $16.31 out the door. I thought the crossover, grills, or tweeters would be worth that much. They need refoaming, and I am up for that task. I just want to make sure the drivers are original. Both have square magnets, and the tweeter is the orange color with the hard wire screen over them. Woofer has metal frame. Grills are in ex condition. I thought I might use them for garage system, going thru my HK 330.
wooferrepair.com has a kit for $26.50 shipped. I used this guy for my AR 98 surrounds, (my first by the way), and was very pleased with his service.

What should I look at as fair as the voice coils? They look like they might be in pretty good shape. Do I need to post a close-up? Lemme know.
I always depend on my friends here, to steer in the right direction. :)

I'd ohm out the Woofers, and see if ther resistance is the same or close on both. then do the cones move freely? If they scrape thats probably due to the absent foam. can you get them to move freely.

You could also use a 1.5V battery to test the VC and coen movement if you don't own a VOM. I'd do it both directions to see if the cone is operating.

If all is well, go for the foam.

The tweeters look stock to me...

Not sure of the square magnets, But my set about that old has square also. I'd say they were stock

i got a pair recently and the refoam job is definately worth it. mine will need to be done before too long, but for now they sure do sound nice.

Mike:
Those drivers are the real deal. If you want to test them, hook them up and lay them flat on their back and play some soft music. The spiders are strong enough to keep them centered for a test and you'll know if they're OK or not.

They'd make a great set of speakers for the garage. I run a stacked set with my SX-939 and it's mighty fine.

OK, so they seemed to be worth the $16. :)

I hooked them up and played very low music. Everything seems to work fine. refoam kits will be ordered next week. Why is it everytime I see a set of speakers, they end up at the house. :scratch2:
Oh my Gawd! :yikes:

I'm not addicted, am I?
Thanks

Nice score, Mike :thmbsp: . I've been in search of a pair of those for a while (naturally, for the kind of deal you got), but so far they have elluded me. Shirley you've ordered foams by now, right.- Mark

Hmm...ya'll get the feeling that Mike is proud to be southern?

picking my advent model 1's tomorrow - seller refoamed them already, I'll be paying a whopping $40 for the pair (passed on the model 3's for $20). From the pic he sent, he also replaced the dust caps, I hope this means the refoam was done correctly and there'll be no coil rubbing...

Nice looking speakers, Mike. I like those orange tweeters. When you do run out of room, just remember I am right down the road.

So what model would the ones pictured be considered?
Also while we are on Advents, I have a set of crossovers that I thought came from some of the older 2 way cabinets. On the back it says Advent/2. It only has the two screw down knob posts, but no switch. They also have 6 wires. 3 black, 2 yellow, and 1 red. what would they fit, and what does the 5th & 6th wire go too? I assume they go to 3 way cabinets? DUH!

The Advent 2 had two tweeters... that's probably why there's three pairs of wires. It's still a 2-way speaker, it's just that there's two tweeters in a funny "double-dihedral" faceplate, to change the dispersion of the highs.

Check the two yellow and the three black wires... I bet both yellow wires go to the same connection in the crossover, and at least two of the three black wires are also run to a common point. Those would be the tweeter wires...

Regards,
Gordon.

If I understand you correctly, then I'd say your assumption was correct in the first place. Those do look like the Advent Utilities. The Advent/1s are very similar looking with the same drivers, but have smaller cabinets with the woofer being closer to the bottom than as in yours.

As for which model, the easiest way to determine which of the Large Advent "Utility" versions it is, is to measure the HEIGHT of the cabinet. If it's around 20" to 22" tall, it's an Advent/1, but if it's like 24" to 26" tall, then it's a Large Advent Utility.

Also, the Advent/1 did NOT have the three-position tweeter level switch on the back. If there IS a three-position switch on the back, it definitely is NOT an Advent/1. If there is NOT a switch, then revert back to the height-measurement test to determine the model...

EDIT: I just cut-and-pasted Mike's picture from above, into a paint program, and "measured" the relative size/scale of the woofer basket (which is right about 12") and the cabinet heght. That cabinet is at least 25" tall, if not more. That's definitely a Large Advent Utility, and NOT an Advent/1.

Gordon.

H26"-W14"X11" deep. These do have the switch in the middle.
You were also correct about the yellow wires connect in the same place. So if I wanted to build some cabinets, and try the 2 tweeter, combo what would my choices be? I mean if I wanted to build Advent/2 clones, or is that not practical?

I personally wouldn't bother trying to clone an Advent/2. That double-tweeter arrangement was a "weak link" in the design, IMHO. The Advent/2 never sounded as good as a Smaller Advent, IMHO.

Put your energies toward stuff relating to Large Advents or earlier-model Smaller Advents... it's a much more rewarding choice...

Gordon.

Whats interesting is I have a set of Large Advent utility's (or so I thought), with the 3 position switch on back, 25.5" high, but the woofers are placed much lower on the baffle and the tweet is a bit different. Build date on the tweets looks like Nov 1975. Minor variations over the years of p[roduction?

I have an original 8 page Advent brochure for the Large Advents. If anyone would like a scan of it, PM me with your email address. The file size is about 3 megs.

So could I modify the crossover I have and build something similar?
The only reason I ask, is I have enough solid red oak to build cabinets the size of the utility speakers. I was thinking I could use the crossover, and mayby modifiy it, since I already have it.
I just love those 2 ways with the big woofer. Maybe a stacked set? :)

I have the Advent 2 with the double tweeter that I got free from a seller of Dali's. I was just wondering are these speakers complete crap or like you said it's the tweeters that are the weak link. How do the other components like the woofer and crossover perform?

Thanks

I've got two pairs of these, and the above statement is exactly right. - Mark
