Hello everyone. I've been running solid-state in my main system for a few years now, but I used to use a Dynaco ST-70, Dynaco PAS-2, and Fisher FM-50B in my main system. I now use the Dynaco ST-70 in my office system, but using a Superphon Revelation as a preamp.
Anyway, I attended a local antique radio swap-meet this past weekend, watching one of the entrance doors before the show opened to the public. Once the gates opened, it took a few minutes to find someone to take over for me so that I could start looking around. Once I did, I got about two or three rows in before I got to a table where I saw a familiar-looking tube cage.
I quickly realized that it was a Dynaco Mark III, and asked the lady behind the table about it. She said that her husband was still unloading stuff from the car, so I'd have to wait until he got back so that he could take offers. I was planning to offer $300, regardless of whether there was another Mark III around there or not, but figured I'd see what he wanted for them. I actually looked around at the next row of tables before coming back around to the table with the Mark III, just as the seller was coming back.
When I asked him about the Mark III, he then proceeded to point out the other Mark III (sitting behind a stack of test equipment), as well as a ST-35 which I hadn't seen (hidden underneath another piece of test equipment). I could feel the sharks start to circle behind me as I asked him what he was looking to get. He started to rattle off some numbers which seemed low, so for clarification, I asked him what he wanted for all three amps. His response was...........
$60! :jawdrop:
As I was getting out my wallet, one of the onlookers yelled "I'll double your money!" Fortunately, the seller disregarded him, and the transaction went smoothly. It was then that the rush to get the amps to the car started. As I was hauling the first Mark III to my car, one of the guys who'd been watching the deal go down offered me $200. I said I'd consider his offer, and then continued the mad dash to get the stuff safely into my car. Once I was finally done, I took my place back at the entrance door, with a wide grin on my face.
Anyway, here are the pics so I can prove that it happened:
I'm planning to replace the molded-paper capacitors, as well as the bias supply components, before I apply power to them. The ST-35 has some small greenish capacitors on it's boards which don't look like the 'black beauty' capacitors I've seen in other Dynaco tube gear; are these still molded-paper, or are they something less likely to have gone leaky? Thanks in advance!
