Marantz 7C / Consolette Restoration Strategy Questions

I debated whether to post this in 'Tubes' or the Marantz-specific section - but ended up here. Hopefully some of the folks over in the Marantz section will read this.....

I have been asked by a pal to fully restore a classic system for him - I am 99% finished with his 3 McIntosh MC-40's and am turning to two 7C and a single Marantz Consolette (Mono) pre-amp.

Obviously these are highly regarded, super-quality engineered and constructed units, He was for many years a pro audio consultant and supplier to NYC and North East recording and mastering studios, and uses a 3-chanel system now to listen to original master recordings.

I am NOT an experienced or qualified tech, but I am careful and deliberate, and have rebuilt a few monbloc amps and pre-amps. He does not want collector-status restorations - he wants reliable use and good / great performance from these units. One of the 7C's seems to have been under the knife before, with several cuts in one of the ground buses and a broken tape selector switch (more on this in a later post) The Consolette has been home to some critters in the past (since evicted), so these are not super-pristine collector units to begin with...

So I'd appeal to the AK reader-ship for experience and advice, especially any who have done something similar to the same or similar units.

My starting point is the VERY detailed restoration / update article by Walt Jung and Chuck Hollander in the 1/1981 'Audio Amateur' titled " Modifying the Marantz 7C / A classic preamp gets a modern overhaul" [Are these guys still reachable? I haven't thought of that till right now..] I have a copy, not sure if fair use would allow me to scan and post it, it does not seem to be posted on the 'net that I can find....

The article has a detailed discussion of parts quality and their effects, and notes more / better regulation of the power and filament supplies, but mostly follows the original circuit, using better grade than available in the 1960's of the same value. I believe this was one of the first articles in the 'POOGE' series, a term coined to mean "Progressive Optimization of Generic Equipment" -I assume that between 1981 and 2013 there might be better STILL components to consider?

- Has anyone here restored either a 7C or a Consolette? What parts did you choose, which, if any, did you keep from the original unit (I just read that the 'bumblebee' caps in the 7C might have been specially specified or sourced Mylar units less prone to failure or leakage that the more common paper type(?)

- The article recommends metal film resistors, specifically RD60D and RN70D made then by Corning I think. So far I have only found the 1/2W version of these to be available, along with the CFP Dale series at Mouser. But they do not seem to be available in many of the values I will need. I want to do this right and not just use any old resistor type, but also don't need or want to spend $5.00 for each one...(it would be a plus to have them all from the same series so they look the same, for visual reasons, but not strictly necessary...) ANY pointers / advice / direction / reasonable screeds - rants would be welcome!

- The parts list in the service manual notes most resistors as Carbon Comp., with some noted as 'deposited carbon' Were the later ones a special type at the time, and should I use something different or specific at those locations? I can post both the schematic and the parts list later - They seem to be at cathode and plate locations for the 12AX7's

-Should I even ask about capacitors? In the Mac amps I used Solens, reasonable cost, reasonable size, test and sound fine in my feeble experience and looking at how freaking PACKED the tone control networks are on these puppies, smaller size will be a distinct advantage. (I am almost done with restoring a Sprauge TO5 cap tester, now I have to be sure I am using it correctly so I might actually rely on leakage measurements to test the existing possibly super-spec Mylar caps. )

-The article goes into more depth than I currently can understand about correct and balanced RIAA compensation, I do not have the test gear or the knowledge to test this, so I will just carefully match the L-R component values and call it good - (I try and do this in any case on all the parts) -

-They also suggest upping the wattage rating an parts (IE if schematic calls for 1/2 watt, use a 1 watt unit) for reliability as well as sonics / stability - Good plan?

As always, and like many here, I really appreciate and value the pointers, help, advice and good cheer in this here forum.

Resistor upgrades are all about minimizing the effects of temperature and voltage coefficients. Swapping out carbon comp and carbon film (deposited carbon) for metal film goes a long way toward this goal. You can maximize the benefit by choosing MF types with superior specs. These days, I believe TC of 25ppm is the sweet spot. Higher wattage is hard to get. You can use multiple devices in series where the best voltage coefficient is desired, or in parallel for simple thermal dispersion, and this strategy has a secondary benefit: statistical accuracy improvement. When space is limited but you need excellent accuracy, you can get the improvement by hand-selecting resistors instead.

Would getting away from carbon comp resistors, especially in the phono section, change the sound in perhaps unpleasant ways? I understand that this equipment will be used for three channel playback, which I guessing means magnetic tape, but my question stands.

Even if reliability is a primary concern, wouldn't new low tolerance carbon comp resisitors be good for a decade or more?

Lastly. As long as I am going on about equipment and subjects that are way out of my league, would you consider rebuilding one section and leaving the other intact and comparing them?

Some cap replacements I've made in my Marantz 7

I have a Marantz 7 (no cabinet so no "c"; that is what the "c" stood for). I doubt the Sprague Bumble Bee caps were anything beyond the standard edition 'cause a few years after I acquired my preamp in 1993, I opened it up and discovered one such cap had a crack running down its length (the old bumble bee caps were "self healing" types so the preamp still worked in both channels). The old Spragues were known for having a tendency to crack I later learned here and elsewhere. So, not only did I replace the cracked cap but all the rest of the caps on the top phenolic board (it's not a circuit board, just a phenolic board with turret tags) using six Infinicap SETI caps and two Hovland Musicaps along with two Nichicon Muse and two Sprague Atom electrolytics. Sounds wonderful to this day driving my rebuilt Mac MC-60's. The tone controls on the Marantz 7 are loaded with Sprague bumble bees, too, which I have not replaced as their removal and replacement is an absolute logistical nightmare I continue to put off! Next step for me will be to replace the multi-section electrolytic cans at some point as well as the original selenium rectifiers and then perhaps some resistors. So far no hum and the preamp continues to sound great so I've been procrastinating . . . . .
But, I do recommend you replace the caps on the top phenolic board because they are very easy to get to and replace as the originals are known for going bad. The Infinicaps are no longer available but there are lots of alternatives like Kimber Kap (also discontinued but available from a few suppliers like Parts Express), Hovland (kinda pricey), Reliable Caps (lots of variations and prices), Illinois (cheap but good), Auricaps and the ubiquous SBE Orange Drops (715P and 716P versions for f & f polypropylene).

Well regardless of current condition you are dealing with "the" most prolific preamplifier of the vintage era and perhaps one of the most important ever.

Many modern designs are based solely on the 7's circuit.

Muddling it the way you suggest will totally corrupt it's value. Only if this one's chassis is drilled through or wholesale original parts are missing would I contemplate it. Feel free but this is not your PAS 3. I have one and a pair of model 1's. I restored both sympathetically by restuffing caps and only replacing what was necessary.

I had a thread on AA on the refurb process for the model 1 and restuffing procedure. I can point you to them if interested.

I agree with "kcin" as far as regarding any circuit modifications to the Marantz 7 but I see no harm in replacing capacitors (especially electrolytics) and any resistors that are out of tolerance if you plan on using this preamplifier in your system. In fact, I highly recommend it. I plan on using my Marantz 7 along with my McIntosh MC-60's as long as possible and have no intention of ever selling them so I could care less about "collector" or "investment" value. I will not modify their circuitry or drill any holes in them but I'll certainly take advantage of todays better film & foil polypropylene caps as well as the far superior Kimber-style RCA female jacks I installed on my MC60's. I'm striving for the best quality sound the old designs offered. As far as preserving the looks of the old parts by stuffing old caps with new and so forth, that just isn't my cup of tea I'm afraid. But that's just me, your mileage may vary.

I would not replace any parts that are not out of spec. If replacing resistors I'd go with carbon film. Metal films, while certainly keeping very close tolerances, may change the sound of the unit - and not for the better (my experience anyway).

Somewhere around here I have a review of a Sid Smith mod of the Model 7 that ran in The Absolute Sound maybe 30 years ago, but I don't know how much detail they go into; as I recall it was mostly cap replacements.

I certainly do appreciate your comments and advice! Thanks for taking the time.

I realize full well the collectable status of these units - I suppose if their owner wanted a collector restoration / refurbishment, he would have NOT entrusted them to me. But he would simply like to enjoy listening to music with them. That I may well be able to help him with.

Also - the condition of the Consolette / #1 is pretty trashed as you will see below. Both of the #7's have had work done in the past, and in the case of the one with the broken tape monitor switch, some puzzling cuts.

- I will scan the Audio Amateur Article. If Old Colony or Ed Dell call me, I'll take it down. I am still curious if anyone has attempted some or any of the measures described.

-BinaryMike - would you hazard a suggestion as to a source of the resistors you mention? It looks like the current Dale / Vishay ones might be the ticket, although not in the 'one step up in wattage' mode.... The better availability / selection of carbon films may win the day with these......

-kcin - I have no intention of 'muddling' either one of these preamps, I want to make them work, reliably, again. Also, I would greatly appreciate a link to your refurb of the Model 1 - Thanks!

-tuberadios69 - I think we are of much the same mind - I am not sure I will take the time to re-stuff can caps. although I did a couple for the Mc-40s, and I was pretty pleased with the later results.

I am not suggesting circuit Mods at all, I guess I was unclear on that - just updating old worn out components that are perhaps beyond their useful service life. The article I mentioned followed this plan - update parts with ones better, but of the same or close as possible value to the original ones. And voltage regulation.

Question - to check if a particular resistor is out of spec, drifted, dodgy, whatever, I assume one must lift one end so as to remove it from any measuring errors caused by adjacent parts - correct?

You can see the poor condition of the #1 below- the rubber vibration - isolation links that connect the tube sub-chassis to the rest are completely shot, among other obvious ills.

Your Model 1 and consolette are totally restorable.

What you choose to do it with is , of course, totally your decision. Carbon comps of the same type AB or Stackpole are still available. New types , well, will look new and sound different. Maybe better, maybe not.

Make it safe on the power supply side 1st and work your way through the coupling caps.

The tape monitor switch can be repaired or replaced ( they are still available if you look)

Anyone an expert on switch nomenclature?

As mentioned above, one of the Model 7's has a busted tape selector switch.

It is listed as part SL7P on in the middle left of the schematic: Marantz 7

It seems that Electroswitch (successors to Centralab?) *MIGHT* still make this switch, but I am totally unsure of how the poles / sections / shorting / non-shorting designations work. I will e-mail the company, but perhaps someone here might point me in the right direction -

I have read the article and unfortunately I find it dated and useless. Perhaps worth reading out of curiosity, nothing more.

Nowadays we know that metal film resistors and polyfilm capacitors are not necessarily better sounding than the old carbon Allen Bradleys and bumble bee caps.

Ditto for voltage regulation. Units that use semiconductor based voltage regulation lose much of their "tube magic" and gain that solid state coldness and shrillness that we were trying to avoid in the first place. A classic example of this is the Audio Research SP-6 and derivatives which were made during the same time period as the "POOGE" article.

Doing these things to a classic Model 7 not only destroys the value but accomplishes nothing in terms of sonic improvement.

One would be better off restuffing the old power supply electrolytics with modern low ESR miniature types.

Sourcing replacement Selenium rectifiers or bypassing the existing tired rectifiers with ultra fast diodes such as the Fairchild UF4007.

The signal caps can be replaced with Russian paper in oils or like the Japanese like to do it nowadays, using modern production caps from the successor of West-Cap which is now called "AZ Cap". These caps look great and are made in the USA with the old machinery. If the Japanese recap their Model 7's with them, they must sound good! :D

This is not the piece to experiment on. Alot has changed since that article was written in terms of intrinsic value and positions on modification of classic hardware. Preserve not modify this class of equipment has evolved.

3 terminal regualtors sitting on a zener reference are so passe'. I used to do this to Dynaco Mark IIIs and all that stuff in the late 70's and early 80's. All these techniques can be done on any number of preamps from dyanco, eico , heathkit etc. These are the one's to experiment on and live with to see whether or not you have taken the soul out of the device or not.

Wholesale changes like the article recommends are really not in vogue for this piece after much of these type of modifications have been lived with for the past 20-30 years or so.

You bring up a good point on the ARC SP6 series.. as time went on and more solid state active devices were thrown into the mix the pre became cool and lifeless. The 6B is often the favourite of that series that went to up to the SP6E. The SP8 that replaced it threw out the active SS regulation and used a series pass tube regulator like many of their top models today.

I know I have had the 6 series and still own the SP8.

If you want a modern preamp please buy one. For example , I own a 125lb 3 chassis modern preamp. The 7 and the model 1s don't embarass themselves at all in sympathetically restored original format.Sometimes I wonder why I ever spent the money on the modern gear... such is the insanity.

My opinion and all that, I am just passionate about these old marantz pieces as I have had a collection of them for over 20 years and have lots of experience with them. YMMV .. Good Luck
