9090 dial lamp bypass procedure

hey guys,

I have seen in Echo's posts (the great wizard), where he has talked about a procedure where you can bypass the selector switch on the 9090 so that the dial lamps stay on when the unit is in any other position besides the FM mode.

How is this done???

I assume the power is removed from the selector pot (wherever that may be), and then do you energize the lamp circuit with a jumper from the 6v tap of the power supply???


I do not have a schematic of the 9090, so DETAIL in the description of how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

I did the modification on my 9090 and like to see them lit all the time. The light circuit is probably on its own set of contacts on the wafer switch so we are not really saving much of the switch.

We have traded "ons and offs" wear and tear on the bulbs for the shorter bulb life of keeping them lit all the time. Probably a wash depending on how much switching you do. But I missed that blue look I was used too on 9090db.

Thanks AK - my 9090 FM/dial lamps went out last week :tears:- tried de-ox-it - no luck:no:.

did the rewire and bingo - beautiful blue everywhere :banana:

Geez I actually like having the lights on all the time - an AK upgrade to be sure.
 
Old post, but just to make clear...someone else figured this out. A much-appreciated modification.
 
It only works if the problem is the result of a bad wafer on the function switch. If the fuse is blown, bulbs are burned out or the lamp holder solder joints are bad, moving that wire alone won't fix it.

Also, this modification is for the 8080 and 9090 only. It doesn't apply to the 9090DB or 8080DB.

As Pete said, and I always resolder the bulb holders on the back of the light bezel, especially the ones for the lamps on the left side, do it now, or do it later, but you will have to do it.

Good old news is still good news!

This old thread helped me bring my 9090 dial lights back to life! :banana: Now, anyone have an idea why the lamp on the far right hand side of the dial behind the graphic "MHz" might take 5 or so minutes to light up after all the other lamps turn on? It is quite dependable, to the point of why mess with it? The only thing is we all know that it will quit at some point. What's up? :scratch2:

Just like I said in post 13...
And Glenn would know, he's our resident expert.
Lamps get hot when in use, then cool when not, as that happens they expand and contract a tiny bit, over time that cracks the ancient solder joint.
Easy to fix, just re-flow the solder joints and plan on doing it again, in say 30 years or so...

I did this tonight on my new 9090, worked like a charm. I still have issues with the source indicator lights but it appears to be a dirt issue, got them working somewhat and ran out of cleaner unfortunately.

BTW, the service manual for the 8080/9090 is available free here

Ran a search and came across this thread. I got a nice 9090 today with the lamps out. Did this mod and voila lamps came right on. The indicator lamps are not fully functional, they are starting to work as I cycle the selector switch. Hopefully all indicator lamps will work after I service controls. Thanks all for this info, the mod is really easy.
