Boo Yaka! Boo Yaka!
Is there any Bluegrass fans around here? I must admit, it's the last frontier for me. Not to say that it's the last genre I need to listen to, but the last ingredient in the music I most enjoy. Since I am an urbanite with no interest in country music, I have always shy'd away. I also think as I leave my youth behind, I am learning to appreciate subtlety more - and thus the wonderful flat picking styles.

Turns out fate has shoved me head first into the deep end. Check out this thrift haul - original Starday, King, Rebel and Rounder!! Here's a couple pics but the entire haul is about double in quantity.

This is a complete 6 volume set released on the Gusto imprint, a reissue label.

Thanks El Pee. I am familiar with The Stanley Brothers having seen their names while browsing reissue labels like Bear Family and Trikont. The great thing is that every last record is mint condition - most look unplayed!! Gonna rip all of them.

Bluegrass and banjo music is something I haven't really dug into much, myself. I'm not anti-country, but I am picky about it.

I will say that I saw a couple of shows years ago that had some banjo, and liked it. One was Harry Manx, and the other was the stripped down duo version of Big Sugar.
 
Well Poppa, knowing what I do about you, you are going to be amazed by some of this stuff. The Stanleys, and Dr. Ralph Stanley even today, are about as close as you can get to a musical time machine. American treasures.

I'm actually distantly related to the Stanleys, my dad's family is from southwest Virginia. It's a sparsely populated area and frankly, most folks are related in one way or another.

Those Rebel records were usually pretty well recorded, but not always well pressed. Give a listen to Rank Stranger, any of the other gospel stuff, and any of the murder songs like "Pretty Polly". You'll hooked, I'm pretty sure.

What can I say... you called it. The music's fantastic. I have listened to a couple Stanley Bros. sides thoroughly... twice. I already ripped their King album and put it up on my blog. came out really nice if you want a copy its here, or just to read my thoughts. Link is in the comments - MEGA is super fast.

I also have a couple artists I didn't mention in the OP. Firstly there's some solo Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, Douglas Dillard and John Hickman. All names which are unfamiliar to me with the exception of Scruggs. Can't wait to check everything out. I will be ripping them as I go along so watch the blog for more - BTW, that also includes full scans using hi-res 300dpi images with Microsoft I.C.E. to recreate a seamless cover.
 
Excellent stuff. I went to a bluegrass festival here locally over Labor Day weekend. I had a great time, lots of good music, the environment was cool, all around an enjoyable experience.
 
Doug Dillard was the banjo player for his family group The Dillards, best known for portraying The Darlings on the Andy Griffith Show.

My wife switched me on to bluegrass and it's ilk. Love it. Some of the best live gigs I've been to in recent years have been acts like John Reischman & the Jaybirds, Bill Bourne, The Be Good Tanyas,The Wailin' Jennys.
