My second awesome score today!

Yamaha PX-3 score, need help with some parts

Well,

I was out picking up fuses for my first score of the day, when I decided to stop by a second Pawn Shop, which my buddy works at, to see what they had.

Still on the shelf was a Yamaha PX-3, deffinatly in need of some TLC, but with the price tag of $99.99 on it. Well, I helped him out with some computer troubles that one of his customers was having and he hooked me up with it for $50!

Now, I'm pretty much a turntable noob. So I need to know what this thing needs. Clearly it needs the following...

-Cartridge
-Stylus
-Feet
-New RCA ends

Does it need a new mat? Where can I find some proper feet for it? And does it need a special cartidge or can I just pick up any standard cartridge?

Don't own one but be careful with RCA ends some need grounding some don't. Someone will fill you in.

Go here http://www.yamaha.co.jp/manual/english/index.php and type in PX-3 and you can download a copy of the owner's manual.

Any decent feet will be fine. But, TTs like good isolation so you may wish to get something other than the $7 feet from PE. Couple of members have the PX-3, so you may want to 'edit' your post and put something about the model number in the title for this thread or they may miss it.

Can anyone give me any info on the cartridge needed? Will any standard one work or will I have to order that special as well.

My came with a Yamaha MC-5 Cartridge, I believe it is the standard Cartridge. The manual is here: http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/av/english/zot/PX-3.pdf

You did a super great buy there.

NOTE! Be extreme careful when you fix it. The control system of the arm is sensitive. If you break it, you are in BIG trouble.

Any feet will do.The orignal mat does a good job of damping the platter,however I don't see why another mat(other than the one on it now )wouldn't be able to do a similar job.The original is a thick heavy mat about 9mm thick.look for something similar,don't spend a fortune.The owner's manual will tell you what weight range of cartridges the arm accomodates.
I wouldn't be surprised if that PX-3 has a whole range of issues needing to be dealt with.Does it run,do all the functions perform?If not have a long think about restoring,it'd be cheaper to buy one that works.
Sorry to sound so negative,but it's not a easy TT to sort out if all ain't right.
