You just never know how it’s gonna go down or when, A few weeks ago I put an ad on CL. The ad simply read: Wanted PIONEER HPM-100 speakers (200 watt version) $100-200.
A person contacted me said he had the 100 watt versions with some generic grills he picked up for them as they had none. He also said he had a SA-9500 that he might sell with the speakers. Well after a few e-mails and talking to him on the phone he was not real thrilled about selling any of the gear but did not have the proper place to set it up and jam like he once did. He said he always enjoyed the live sound it produced. He gave me a price and said to think it over. I thought it over for two days and e-mailed him that I just could not take his gear away from him. He sounded like one day he would put it to good use once again. I felt good about that. That was two days ago.

Today I have a fire going the weather is cold and raining. I am on the couch with a blanket jamming with the RT-909 cranking out some KISS Alive! When out of the blue I get a call. I answer the phone with the music still blasting I figure it to be a telemarketer. I almost just played lazy and not answered it. The woman on the other end says Hello! Several times as I struggle to calm down the SPEC beasts. She tells me she works at Habitat for Humanity and she saw my ad on CL and just Today got in some HPM-100’s in really nice shape. It’s about 2:12 pm and I ask the price, she said she looked at ebay and CL and set a price for them. I ask what kind of payment do they accept and she says cash, credit, debit etc.. She asks where I live. I tell her I am about 35 min. away and can you hold them till I get there? She says they close at 3:00 pm and cannot hold the speakers for me. She gives me directions and I say I will jump in the car in less than 10 min. and be there before 3:00. When I get there I have 12 min left before closing. Real nice women Jodie says they normally don’t accept speakers only furniture and building materials but she said these were in such good shape she took them anyway. Good thing for me!
So here is what I got. The damn close-ups came out all blurry with my cheap camera. So I did not post those.
But I will let you be the judge here.
I don’t think you will see pictures of 100’s stacked atop 200’s showing up as common place. I have now replaced the Mach Ones with the 100’s what I have been after for some time to create a deadly combination! Its too early to tell but so far two hours into it Wow!
Everything in real nice unabused shape not perfect but very, very nice.

Great story! They look like they're in pretty nice shape too. I know you'll enjoy them. Your 200's are very nice too. Got my 100's from a thrift too for about the same price. I lucked out because when I spotted them there was a guy checking them out and when I walked up to them he said "dont waste your time the speakers are no good". Luckily for me, it was just pushed in dust caps.

Saturday evening I dialed in the sound I was looking for all this time. This being my bedroom setup it is used as my alarm clock every weekday, but crucial listening never really took place before. The Mach Ones the 100's replaced were just to efficient and would keep the 200's from shining thru.
Now the 100's & 200's are almost evenly matched in efficiency.
I find myself wanting to listen now with eagerness because it sounds so damn good now. Got that bass that hits your gut and travels up your spine and the mids and highs are now more tame and fit into the mix more than before. The Mach Ones were just to damn efficient and I was getting a more treble and mid soundstage before. I can't totally blame the Mach's for this because I did change up my EQ and tone setting Sat. night and my ears found what they have been craving.
The combination now is totally different and amazing campared to what it sounded like before.
So I can safely say the HPM-100 & 200 are great together and although I Love Mach speakers they do not play well with the 200's.
So I now know what all the previous HPM-100 owners talk of. I Love this new amazing soundstage and plan on taking advantage of it as often as I can plus the fact that the speakers and grills are in beautiful condition.
My new version alarm clock never sounded so badass! Even at low volume you get that deep bass soundstage that I get on my SPEC rig in the frontroom.
Nothing like waking up to HPM's every morning, makes your day alot more enjoyable to say the least.
 
Great score and nice story. I have two pairs of 100 watters, both in decent but not great condition. When hooked up to two amps through a single pre, great for bombing away!!

Yes! They are huge for stereo speakers. If you have ever seen a Marshall 4 x 12 guitar cabinet in person you have a good idea just how large the 200’s are. I have a Crate 4 x 12 guitar cab with four 12” Celestion speakers in it which is identical in size to a Marshall cab. It has heavy duty rollers that make it stand about 3” off the ground. I once posted a side by side photo here at AK of the cabinets next to each other and even tho the Crate was up off the ground on rollers and the 200 was sitting on the ground they were the same height and width. So they don’t have a lot of WAF or GAF going for them unless she is really laid back and cool with something that big in the house. It took me six months of searching to find my current home and one big consideration was gear placement and have it all fit just right. Fortunately I found one that could accommodate both my massive SPEC rig and the 9500 bedroom system. Its great to have a bunch of gear specially with big footprint and stand impressive when setup, but if you don’t have the room or space to spread it out and set it up properly it can be frustrating at times.
 
Mark, congrats on the new 100s! Keep your eyes peeled for one more set and double stack them rascals. :yes:

Now that would be something! I can only imagine. But what would I do with my HPM-200's? I just cannot bring myself to replace those or sell them or move them or....
HPM-200's are just to rare and nice sounding not to mention very impressive size wise I could not bring myself to change it all up.Given the fact that the pair I have are in great shape compared to the few sets I see up for auction @the ever so popular auction site. They are always missing something need new foam or have replacement woofers or worse hacked up!:tears:
I think the two compliment each other and are a great combination. The efficiency between both are almost identical and both sets pump out at the same volume level unlike my previous arrangement where the Machs took presedence over the 200's. But you got me thinking tho. The way my stacked Mach Twos blow me away everyday its a thought. But for now I will enjoy it the way it is. Doubt I would ever come across another set this nice to match and anywhere near the price I paid.

This past weekend I used some Formby's lemon oil to replinish the wood. I am thinking about getting some minwax poly coat to use on the 100's and my Mach Ones and Twos this spring. Just not sure wether to go with satin or high gloss finish?:dunno:
