Hi everyone,

I just bought by first unit and I'm really excited to get to work restoring it. She's a Magnavox Micromatic, model no. 2ST654. The model number under the record player says G600. Unfortunately, it does have one problem:

Can anyone help? I a complete newbie at this and so I don't really know where to start.

The other images of the unit are here: http://img12.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=dscn8315.jpg

Thanks!

Looks to need a new cartridge. What else is wrong with it?

Hey, Welcome to AK.

There does seem to be a bit of info about these old Magnavox units out there. The best advice I could give would be to start googling and reading.

Here are some links to other AK threads and some other sites to get you started and might help you find a replacement cartridge. Best of luck. It looks like a cool piece.

you guys are awesome. I'm completely lost, so i really appreciate you bearing with me.

I do have a cartridge that came with the player and a needle that needs replacing. The cartridge is an Astatic 133 (also says 3-78 on the side) and the needle is an Astatic N50. I don't actually know if these match the player, though it seems like it might.

Thing is, they weren't attached and I can't figure out how to attach them. It looks like there should be a screw or something that drops through the hole at the end of the tone arm and then connects to the cartridge. Does that sound about right?

Basically, it just looks like it's missing a part.

The second issue is how to figure out the wiring. There are four wires and 3 ends (you can see that two of them connect at the end). I have no idea how to hook this up to the cartridge.

Again, I apologize for having absolutely no clue what I'm doing, I really just want to play some records. The radio on this baby works and the sound is just beautiful.

p.s. sorry for not posting all the pics, I didn't want to look like I was just cluttering up the post.

Hey, no problem! :thmbsp: We are all here to help! If you are going to go any further on the turntable, it's probably best for you to remove it from the console so you can see everything better.

It's really quite easy. Just unplug it's 3 prong power connector, and the two RCA jacks, then flip up the little clips on the two mounting screws, then it should lift right out.

Trace the cartridge wires from the tonearm to the RCA jacks underneith. For four wire connections, two of them should be a ground, and the other two should be the right and left positives. (write down the colors of each wire and where they connect to the RCA plug)

The cartridge itself is gonna be the fun part. Most (not all) will indicate on which pin is for the ground and which is for the right and left. If you have a four pin cartridge, two will be for the ground and two will be for the right and left. Hope some of this helps! :music:

PS, 3 pin cartridges will have one for ground and two for right and left.
