This month I'll be 5 years with my current employer and at the 5 year mark they give you $400 to spend in gift catalog I paid a little extra but decided to get this

a Sony NEX-5 with an E18-55mm lens I see a fun learning curve ahead. Right now we have an Olympus that a little more than a point and shoot but a digital SLR. Out of all the cameras we had the one the seemed take consistently the best pictures was a Sony point and shoot that my wife had. I'm hoping that quality will come thru with this

Nice camera! Now, be on the lookout for a nice "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens from an old film SLR. Your camera has a feature called "focus peaking", which is purported to be the best thing since sliced bread for reusing MF lenses.

Any of the old fast 50mm's from Canon, Pentax, Minolta, Olympus etc. will be great on this camera with a cheap Chinese adapter from fleabay or Amazon, and will open up a lot more possibilities, especially indoors, than the kit lens.

Very nice camera kbott, although Sony created a new lens mount for the NEX series of cameras (E-Mount) most older A-Mount lenses can be used with an adapter. See below:

"The Sony NEX-5 features a new lens mount dubbed the Sony E-mount, and at launch, Sony is offering three E-mount lenses compatible with its NEX-series camera bodies -- a 16mm f/2.8 prime, an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom, and an 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom. Two conversion lenses specific to the 16mm prime increase the wide-angle possibilities for E-mount photographers. In addition, the NEX-5 is also compatible with the company's Alpha (A-mount) lenses courtesy of an optional adapter."

There is a plethora of A-Mount lenses on the used market at very reasonable prices.

Enjoy.

I'll plowing thru the manual over the next couple of days and will start playing around with it. Got the battery charged last night and my wife had an extra 32Gb sd card as she just bought a sony handycam additional lenses and all will come with time though I see old film slrs and stuff at gw and garage sales all the time

getting that adaptor mount will be on the horizon. My wife really likes pictures but I got it primarily because I need to take better pictures of stuff I sell

just got off eBay at $400 that adaptor is going to be down the road a bit maybe Christmas or B'day or that next big sale

Absolutely loving this camera. I was away this weekend for my son's OCS graduation and got some great shots. I'm starting to play around with it and it can do a lot of things that I couldn't do before.

I am lookout now for a zoom lens though
