IS THE WORD "VINYL" ACCEPTABLE?

This is a copy paste of my answer in another thread.

---

I say vinyls a lot to troll the kidies. But it's all in jest. Kind of poking fun at my own hobby and the people I share that hobby with. TBH vinyls is a fun word to say.

I also used to to troll the, ugh, VC guys on youtube (if you know you know) with the user name, Vinyl Communities Communal Vinyls. I don't even want to get started on them. That's a whole different topic of poser regardless of if they use vinyl or vinyls or any other soft material with music pressed on it name.

Anyway use whatever term you like so long as you are enjoying the hobby. For anyone looking for other names here's a list of ten Atlas Records put together. With my observations.

Wax <the term wax bothers me way more than vinyls
Vinyl <you know technically records are not vinyl they are PVC which is different so maybe we should call records chlorides
Platters <you were a hipster in the 50s
Spinners <you were a hipster only in the summer of 62 or 69
LPs <accepted term but some people confuse it with CDs
Records <what they are... or your court documents depending on which one you've picked up most recently
Vinyls <--- oh s**t even a record label is using that v word with an s. I feel both vindicated and saddened
Slabs <you live in Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Buffalo, or SF
Frisbees <Nobody likes you
Licorice Pizza <you live within 1 Sq. mile of a original location and think it's a inside joke

I'm going to make a vote to change the term vinyl to chloride(s) that way not only is it more accurate but it can be made plural without issue.

Alright, I've made this post too long already and nobody is reading anymore. Lets all put a chloride on and enjoy.

This is a more serious subject than I thought.

Maybe, to be safe just call it "that thing?"

Like, "Could you flip that thing over, please? Thanks!"

It's only serious for the uptight half!
Oh! That half.

Patsy Cline knew what's up. She went from records to things, 'I've got these little things and she's got you', and she did it within the lyrics of one song. Opened with records, skipped vinyls and went right to things, and they still sound the same as they did before.

Is the word "Vinyl" acceptable when talking about Records, LP's ? What's YOUR opinion?
Vinyl is the name of a material, not any particular object made of the stuff. The 33rpm records are made of vinyl, so I call them vinyl records. However, if someone calls them 'vinyls' when discussing music recordings, I'll still know what is being referenced by the colloquialism, and won't get upset over the usage of the word.

i don't lie about it but i also generally don't volunteer the info :dunno:
A guy at work got fired for volunteering a little too much of his secret information, especially to some of the younger interns. Photo-wise. It went on for years (over eight years). I would never have guessed it. He kept that part of his life so well under wraps. And the women were way too scared to report it. What's crazy is these women worked everyday with this guy. No one on the staff knew what was going on. It was the oddest HR report we had to fill out.

Someone finally reported him. That morning the LAPD showed up and escorted him out of the building. Management said nothing. They still haven't said anything (almost one year later).

After the event, all these women started talking about their incidents with the guy. None knew that there were others; they all thought they were the only ones. Then to find out it had been going on for years.

The woman who reported him had to quit. Because of all the legal issues she got caught up in. We have no idea what happened to her.

Another sad part of this is this guy is married with a newborn. Really a sad situation.

Those of us who grew up playing records (or LPs) will always think of them in those terms.
"Vinyl" is a term used by the younger crowd who think the old stuff is cool.
IMHO, they are not - I unloaded all my LPs in the early 80s and don't miss them one bit.

The funny thing is the people at work ask me, "Oh, you are into records?" These are 20-30 year olds.

Only the two old farts say "vinyl" at work.

'No idea what happened to her'. Once the dust settled she and the guy got married, moved away and a live a life of quiet anonymity happy to have found each other.
