Gotcha. Thanks for pointing out the series cap relationship. I've read tons of stuff since I've become interested in diy audio but it's not until I work on something myself, and have someone else point out the things I'm overlooking, do I really learn. Going to a lower voltage opens up some possibilties as well. Again, thanks for your help!
I know I’m years later, but beginning the same journey with a RCA console HiFi with the RS-199B Amp. I inherited this and I’m looking forward to restoring it to good working condition. is this thread still monitored, I could use some advice

Hi DKR, Welcome to AK :cool:

If you have questions about your RCA, this will be a good place to ask them. It's not so much of a thing whether the thread is still monitored, all threads that get posted to, even old ones, get bumped to the top of the page. From there, people who know the answers to your questions will usually respond. So ask away, and see what returns ya get :thumbsup:

@DKR

Welcome aboard and here's hoping you enjoy your time here at AK.

A lot of extremely knowledgeable folks here so you'll be able to get some great advice, assistance etc.

A good place to start is what is your current expertise with regards to tube amp repair/restore in general? what current equipment do you have or have access to.

I ask because this will help others to help point you in the right direction etc.

As the owner of a modified RCA RS-177 I look forward to you progress

Will you restore it as original to use in the console or modify/upgrade to use stand alone? I rebuilt one using Kegger's suggested schematic. Worked fine but had a very significant HF rolloff. It needs some feedback around the output transformer to make it work well. Probably could use a bit more gain in the driver stage to accommodate the feedback. I think I added 5 or 6dB of global feedback and that brought the treble up nicely.

My plan is to restore the amp chassis first, before making a decision about whether to move forward with the rest of the console components. I am gathering parts now,CE Manufacturing is building a new multi section can capacitor, delivery is 7-10days out Also getting the two 100MFD capacitors from their distributor Amplified Parts. I could use a recommendation on a solid multimeter capable of testing the components in the RS-199B chassis, mine fall short on capacitance measurements, diode tests, etc. Also what are the most critical probes to buy for the mm. I dis assemble a basic dim light current limiter for initial power up testing. I am a novice level technician, my electronics training was in the Navy in 1971. Since that time, my electrical work has mostly been household repairs of appliances, board level replacements and that sort of thing. Tube amp circuit work is new to me. I can work my way through a schematic, but it’s a slow process for me. I am enjoying the challenge and learning from so many helpful resources
