Canton GL-260 bookshelf speakers

What's the safest way to take off the grill from the Canton GL 260, and to open the case to inspect the electrolytic caps?

I just received mine and hooked them to my Mission Cyrus. I find the sound OK, but surprisingly flat, lacking definition, and a bit midtone-heavy. How do I know the caps need replacement?
 
Ah this is awesome, @pepoyaso. Without your pointers it would have been difficult to figure out how reports about other speakers relate to my GF 260. Thank you!
 
What do we miss if we recap with standard industry 6.8µF and 39µF capacitors for our Canton GL-260, instead of the specialized Jantzen parts?

I guess I'm not asking if the differences are audible — I'm sure they are, looking at the various Jantzen/Mundorf/... comparison threads here in the forum.

I just want to avoid doing anything stupid when replacing the caps in my 40+ year-old Canton speakers.

We have an electronic components store in the city and I wonder if it isn't enough to simply buy whatever capacitors they have on stock there and give it a try, as long as the µF capacitance values are matching.

Would they technically do the job? Or would I risk any problem, beyond nuances in sound quality? Anything to watch out for?

I prefer film capacitors, e.g. WIMA-capacitors.
6.8µF=
Parallel connection of 4.7µF and 2.2µF
39 µF=
Parallel connection of 33µF and 6.8µF
 
Thank you! Do you prefer film capacitors because they’re superior here, or just because they’re a little less pricey than Jantzen‘s?
 
Figured this deserved a bump as I sit here listening to my GL 260 speakers. These are my go to temporary setup as I’m working away from home the past six months. Go great with my smaller form factor Cambridge Audio Sonata receiver.
 
I'm sleepy and didn't read all responses. I just saw what I think that you own Canton Karat 40's? This is one JBL GUY that regrets selling my pair of Karat 40's. Awesome era for Canton. Superb!
 
Does anyone know if Canton ever offered speaker stands for these? Or know of a decent stand that would work with them. They aren’t very deep (less than 5”). I definitely need to get them off the TV stand and spread them further out.

I have never seen any Canton specific speaker stands, but to be honest I have not looked.

Several times I have simply used Ikea wood stools as inexpensive speaker stands. They work remarkably well. Any solid bar stool about 24" high would do the trick.

Yeah, I’m sure I can easily find something that will work. I was just curious if there was an OEM option for them.

Come to think of it, I’ve got some wood bar stools in the garage just sitting there.
