Last year we completed a patio renovation. We removed a deck, and poured a stamped concrete patio with a roof over it. While the construction was happening, I wired the ceiling for 4- Niles speakers and built inclosures to go behind the speakers. I knew bass would be a challenge for the 4- 8” Niles speakers, so I pre-wired for a sub box to go under a cantilever build out in my dining room.
The box is built from cheap 3/4 OSB, glued up with construction adhesive. I separated the box into 2 sealed chambers that are each about 3.5 cu.ft. And added bracing between the top and bottom panels. The legs are Cedar 2x4’s laminated. I painted the OSB with an exterior paint to match out house trim. Then I wrapped the box in moisture shield boards to match my landing and steps.
The speakers are the 12” GRS 4 ohm woofers from Parts Express. I wired them in series for an 8 ohm load to my amplifier, and used Speakon connectors. The subs are down firing, and the Speakon connectors are also on the bottom. A press on one woofers results in the other speaker pushing out, so I’m confident the box is sealed nicely.
I wrapped my speakers wires coming out of the house in a rodent resistant Techflex. I was really concerned about rodents making my sub cabinet their home, so I went with a sealed box construction. The woofers are poly coned with rubber surrounds, so I hoping they take the weather ok.
I’m super happy with the end result. I think it looks great, and it really can pound. I’m driving it with a Yamaha mx630. At 8 ohms it puts out around 150 watts per channel. The whole rig is controlled with a Wiim Ultra with sub out, so I can dial the cut off frequency volume, and EQ from my phone on the patio. The sub integrates nicely and I’m really enjoying patio time.
I do have some custom perforated toe kicks to go on the box. They are at powder coating currently. Once those are installed, it should be tough for any critters to make their way under the box.
