Utah WD-90s advice - buy or fly?

Saw these in the SA and was wondering if anyone has any info or opinion on them. Grill is fixed, but looks like a 12" 3-way system, with mid and hi level controls. Cabs are in pretty good shape too...$35 for the pair. Whaddya tink, guys?

Not sure about that model number, but the Utah comsumer speakers I've seen and heard from the early 1970's (?) are no great shakes. I have a pair of 15" 3-ways that were pretty crummy (caveat: their previous owner had "modified" them extensively). The accordion-surround woofers have metal dustcaps and don't go very low at all (look and sound like instrument speakers).

The 12" 3-ways I've seen have cone MR and a horn tweeter, IIRC, but I can't imagine they're a bargain @ $35.

Peruse eBAY and see what the comparables are fetching.

Just for the cabinets they'd be worth $35.
I got a pair earlier this year, and they sound pretty decent, as DavidLD said, a bit muffled or indistinct in the treble.
I have had a lot of FUN listening to them. I also have a big-A pair of MP-3000, a 15-inch system, and enjoy them, too.
Cloth surrounds, so at least no real worries there. I'd grab 'em just 'because they're there.'
 
I think most folks in this thread is still relatively active, so one could choose a 'worse' thread to resurrect.

Personally, bringing old threads back tnat have good info is a nice thing to see.
 
Utah speakers were great in guitar amps, back in the 60's, dunno how that translates to stereo today...back then, if I was buying a system, I certainly would have considered them, but that said not without hearing them ;)
 
I got a set of WD90s for free and they were just about worth that. I found that a previous "caretaker" had wired the tweeter and mid of one of them directly to the input terminals ending their usefulness as noise makers. Not knowing when to quit, I got a set of mids and tweets and restored them to their former mediocrity. The woofers were kind of interesting in that they had the KLH type reverse roll cloth surrounds but the treatment was something exceedingly stiff, almost like lacquer, and relatively opaque. Never tried the Brake Fluid breakfast on 'em. Maybe I should ...
