The stands I got are 23 in high. Can't recommend them, too flimsy. 23" works well. You want the tweeters in line with your ears. Speakers are 2.5' from the wall. Sub is behind the right speaker. You don't have to be precise with the woofer. Bass travels better than mid or highs They're great speakers but even better if you have an amp with some power. Mine are the 4ohm version and the amp does 400 wpc to 4ohms.

I'm thinking of getting wooden bookshelves at the Container Store..
They sound muddy, without much definition.. but I must have had them for 30 years. I hear about re-capping speakers. Could that be the issue?
I have a McIntosh 5300 Integrated Amp which is only 160 wpc at 4 ohm. Could that be the problem? Of course, I can't play them very loud because I'm in an apartment.

The previous owner recapped mine. If they sound muddy or veiled that's a sign along with their age that the caps are bad and the speakers need a recap. My Outlaw put out 165wpc into 4ohms and I didn't think it was enough for the Karats. If I was in an apartment I'd go for near field listening and I don't think that the Karats would be the speakers for that.
