My thinking is:

V1 Telefunken12AX7
V2 RCA 12AU7 black plate
V3 RCA 12BH7 black plate
V4 I thought I'd use the two 12AX7 I have since that position makes the least amount of difference in the signal path and save a little bread for now.

V5 and V6 I'm leaning towards RCA 6L6 GC black plates
V7 I'm thinking RCA 5U4GB black plate since they seem robust and play a critical roll in rectification and current supply.

This is my target. It bites, but I don't want to be doing this multiple times because I made poor choices. I appreciate your advice that spending more money doesn't necessarily mean good results. At the same time, the MC 30s are my end game unless I'm convinced otherwise down the road. It's taken a lot of years to work my way up to a complete McIntosh system.
What do you use for cooling fans?

Do you have any great tubes you would suggest and are interested parting with?
I think I need a tube tester as I'm more serious at this point. Any suggestions for a tube tester that does a good job for a hobbyist?
Don't mean to be any more of a pain in your ass than I already am, but I do appreciate input from a guy like you who's been there and knows what he's talking about.

I've two Tele 12AX7's. Sound great. I wouldn't pay 400 dollars for them. V4 position. I use NEC 12AD7's for V1. Google these. I will send you a complimentary pair if you want. I've new TS 5891A's as finals. Tube Depot for under $100 a pair. 5U4 use the GB variety. For the rest, most vintage brands are OK. Stick with reliable sellers. Tube amps are my hobby. I drove freight trains across Wyoming for a living. Paul.

My dad is retired UP conductor. Started on the M&StL in 1958. C&NW bought them and then UP bought them. 43 years later he has a great retirement.
