ok...Its a MK volkswoofer sub. It is in very good shape except for the foam(pics to come shortly. It has a 12 inch woofer. and it is functional. {who carries the correct foam for this model?

It has a oak veneer and it is a bit on the heavy side. The veneer is in very good shape, save for a slight scratch, which can be sanded off in a spiff. It is a good candidate for some Restore-a-finish. But a sanding first.
I read that it is from around 1977....But havent been able to find meaningful specs on it. But i did see that it is a class A amp, in it(correct me if im wrong please).....stay tuned for pics....BTW

Seems i have some extra space. Now to see if they upload onto the site. they sure did...

Im giving them a good rub down of acetone....And i would like to coat them with some watered down glue, so the foam would hold up a bit longer(hopefully). They do seem to be coated and or treated foam. As the old foam is still there, cracks at spots. But surprisingly it is still holding a pressure as the sub is still sealed.:D

So any suggestions as to the better glue (watered down or straight) to further coat the old foam?

Thank you AK for the extra space even tho im such a dead beat in supporting the site.

One day ill have the funds to send in my subscription and a bit of a donation. But the time has not come yet.

Dont forget to give descriptions of your use of the sub. and specs if any one knows about any?!

Just refoam them, do not bother trying to milk any more hours out of the tired, cracking foam. You do not want your foam flying off when you play 1812 Overture anyway...

From where would be the correct foam be found?
Considering that i dont want to use just any generic foam. id like as close to original thickness and roll size. I am so glad that it worked when test firing. I was worried that it may not be in working condition.

What i think ill ultimatly do is to use it in conjunction with one of my pairs of RSa, free up the bass duties from it. Ive always wanted to do that. and im expecting a bit of clean up in the sound for it...Man it sure needed a cleaning. Hopefully the scrubbing i gave it should get rid of the smell from it. I also washed out the grill and cloth. sure made a difference in its appearance...

pm recieved and reply sent....thanks. Any one with opinion on this subwoofer? Just what is it capable of?

I've worked on a similar sub (a little newer) and I did not get to hear it because the amp was broken, but it seemed to be very nicely made...

What model was it? Too bad about the amp being defunct. the little time i played the sub it sounded good.

Now im going to have conflicts about which speaker amp combo to use it with...lets see i could use it with the 2000x and M7 clone/pioneer CS51 or do i use it with the RSa and augment the sub 30 hertz freqs. or do i use it with the vynil rig....i guess ill hunt for a bit more info on it....cheers.

You know, on a subwoofer I might be inclined to try and repair the surround first. I would try something flexible like silicone RTV. Subwoofer foam surrounds are a lot thicker so there is more surface area to glue the crack back together and put a thin layer of RTV on the backside behind the crack too. In the end it will probably crack in another spot but I'd still give it a go. (I'm cheap!)

Good scroe!!! I am curious to know how it sounds too!!!
Been looking for one of those!! Pm sent.....

The short time i played it, It sounded good, No rubbing woofer. And sounded full. Tho i still need to try it with speakers as satellites.

I have been looking for a long time for a sub. As the ksw 10 subs seem ....gee i dont know what word to use. but i like how this sub sounds...and my kids thought it sounded cool...a big plus. they like stereo equipment as much as i do.

soundmotor,My car is in need off brake serviceing. Not sure if ill have quite enough this pay period. And i wont be able to buy some surround material for a while. Although the cab is still well sealed.
Im a cheapskate my self....i guess some would call it frugality. Though you wouldnt know it from looking at our stereo:D but if you knew the price i paid for most of the items....then youd understand...:D

IN the mean time im wondering. Would aileens tacky glue wither wattered down or straight work on strengthening the foam for a while until i can get the surround.

Can RTV be thinned with water? maybe not?!

Im a cheapskate myself...though others would call it frugality. But you wouldnt know it from looking at our stereo(s).....But if you knew the price paid for the equipment then youd understand.

Excellent score!
M&K practically invented the sub-satellite concept. Yours appears to be one of their early powered subs.
When I bought a Volkswoofer III in '81, I got a brochure also listing the Volkswoofer A, which looks just like yours. Probably the very next iteration. Specs are probably also very similar:

Freq. Response Hz, +or-3dB: 18 - 100
Input impedance: 200 ohms
Power: Internal Amp. 60 watts

Seems unlikely that the amp is class A. The only heat sink is the aluminum mounting plate. They were relatively low powered by today's standards. Yet these subs sound excellent and play with authority. My Volkswoofer III has a chip amp (see attached) of only 40 watts!

This vendor claims to sell the correct surrounds for M&K subs:

http://www.speakerrepair.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=m_k-re-edge-kits

However, they're sold in pairs, including glue, a brush and gasket segments. So you end up buying twice as much stuff as you need.

jefe vt----yes i thought so my self...perhaps ill score again tonight...not sure yet.

Stuart---thanks for that bit of info on the sub that you have...and im sure thay are pretty close in performance.

Nice that yours goes down to 18 hertz...i hope that mine does the same as well. And if it does?! Just what i was looking for....I also thought that the 200 watt rating was kinda dubious. But i read it on the internet...(sheepish grin) and i thought that it might be true...But wheres the heat sinks?

And a class A inside an enclosure? pretty hard to swallow i thought...But again i read it on the internet....And whatever is read on there is.....?

cfranz----could just upload pics of those satellites and just what work do they need?

Edit----BTW thanks for the link stuart!

I'm only gonna say this once. Absolutely NO offers to Buy, Sell or Trade are allowed.
If you wanna do that, take it to PM and don't make any mention of it here.

I'm with soundmotor on this one. I might be tempted to just try dilluted elmer's white glue brushed on the surround.

thanks for correcting me on this one celt.

I did use some watered down Aileens tacky glue. and it seems to be working quite well. Until i can purchase a set of surrounds
