Last night at work.Things were a little slow.I had just recieved two more Arcol 300 watt 8 ohm resistors and was looking for some scrap aluminum for a heatsink. Went out to the scrap metal dumpster. At first glance all I saw was iron and stainless,no aluminum...But buried down in the bottom of the bin was a decomissioned 150 HP 3-phase Allen-Bradley freq.drive..:scratch2: Now that is bound to have a heatsink in it.:scratch2: Dug that sucker out of the bin and drug it back to the machine shop. Field stripped it and...."Jackpot"

Drilled and bottom tapped it for 1/4-20 x 1/2" hex cap screws..

nice find. May I ask what DL is?
Or, what the project might be?

Dummy load. Mount those serious resistors to the big heatsink, and you now have a device that provides a load when testing an amplifier's output. I bet this one would heat a room nicely when it's dissipating around 600 watts. :D

:yikes: Do you still have the big Yamaha amp to give her a run at 4 ohms?

Yes..It has a little problem in the buffer circuit. Mark B has a PC5002M he wants to load check with 2 ohm.---Fire extinguisher will be close at hand.:D

Add a little thermal compound and torque down the fasteners.

That variable frequency drive probably also have six or so electrolytic capacitors the size of a Foster's beer can in them. Maybe make a huge power supply with them.

Sure did and SCR's the size of a pack of cigarettes.Thats what was mounted on the heatsink.Threw all that back in the dumpster..I was only looking for the heatsink.
