Put The 1229Q Back Into My System, Because...

NoTransistors

Dual Turntables Super-Restorer
My Q has vast sentimental value, because my dad purchased it for me. Every time a 1219 or 1229 had traveled through my shop, though, I marveled over it's superior sound, and lower rumble. So, when I got a 1219 for just a few dollars, the Q went to a closet. Since then, the 1219 has gotten lots of tweaks that have raised it to a very high level, but what about my 1229Q?
It has languished in the closet for the last few years, until the thread titled' What turntable have you used the longest' caught my eye a few days ago.
Out of the closet [no, it is not gay], it went. Plugged it in with a V15 III, and there was that same low-intensity rumble.
Then I gave it the rim-polishing as well as the caulk damping and silicon fry-splatter screen under-mat.

Sooo very quiet now. But, honestly, the arm's sonics are still just that. The 1219/1229 unfortunately sound best. But I did give it a good shot.

Good for you. Alhough I got my 1229Q, she is not in the main room but in my den for private listening (together with my Garrard Type A). On the main room are the main attractions, like my Thorens TD 124 and my beloved Garrard Lab 80. Yes, I have sentimental attachment on my Lab 80 because that was the same one Dad had. I think she'll outlive my Dad, maybe even me! :thmbsp:

The 1229Q was the only Dual with carbon fiber arm components. Why they went such a costly route, when a very light ALLOY design could have been borrowed from the 701, is a mystery. It must be this exotic material that makes the Q sound different.
Perhaps it creates a unique resonant situation that the engineers felt would be best for tracking Quadraphonic discs.
Seems to make the cartridge sound either rolled-off or ruler-flat, I cannot tell.

My dad barely remembers me and does not remember my name. That hurts.

I am so sorry to hear that about your Dad, my Pops had dementia as well before he passed. Luckily he always knew us kids, even though he thought he was younger and still working on cars. He would rebuild an engine while lying in bed, I sure miss him. I will keep you in my prayers it is very tough to watch that happen to those who were our protectors and our mentors. God Bless you and your Dad.

I think it is pretty cool that you have something that brings enjoyment, but also has big sentimental value. I know when the day comes that my dad is not around anymore(providing I outlive him), I will enjoy spinning some of his lps on his table.

My grandmother had Alzheimer's. The signs were there for awhile, but she still knew who I was when we talked on the phone, so I didn't give it much thought. When she came to town for my wedding she was brought to my house the next day. I was looking forward to showing her the house, yard, etc(part of my down payment came from her and my grandpa downsizing financially). She was the biggest gardener ever. I had a small garden in the backyard and showed it to her. She just shrugged her shoulders and walked away. Two years before that she would have praised it as the best garden in the world. It broke my heart. Outside of the day my wife had a miscarriage it was the saddest day of my life. It was also the last time I saw her that she remembered who I was. Although the last time I visited her, about a year before she passed, she couldn't stop studying me. It was like she thought she knew me, but wasn't sure. That was a couple of years ago, but I still wonder what was going on in her brain that day.
Sorry about your dad. Spend as much time with him as you can. Even though he doesn't remember you all that well, it is still well worth it, in my opinion.

Back To The Original Thread Topic

As you may gather from the earlier posts on this thread, I am not too thrilled with the sound of my Q, as compared to the 1219.
Whisper quiet, without a hint of motor noise, so I blamed it on the arm material, carbon fiber.
Well, tinkerer that I am, I pulled the platter, and found the slightest play in the top motor bushing. As with all these motors, as they wear, they begin to mak a noise when NOT under load.
This was not satisfactory for me. Took my last spare motor with a decent top bushing, and set it into my precious Q.
While there is zero difference in perceived rumble between either of the two motors when installed, the audio now sounds alive, rather than rolled-off and dead.

What I am trying to say, is what others have. Rumble is more than an annoyance that disappears when the music begins. It colors the music even if you cannot perceive it.
Must also have something to do with the frequency of the rumble and resonance of the arm, as this seems to show.

Now the Q can stay in my main system. The 1219 goes in the other system [you know, the one that doesn't glow].

Got Sound-Stage?
I guess that those little Black Forest Elfs knew what they were doing, after all.
Seems that this turntable, with its odd arm, requires nothing short of perfection in its motor bearings. More than a 1219 or 1229. Absolute silence, and then some.
What happens when this motor loosens-up?
Not a clue.

But for now, I am very satisfied with the sound

I just missed out on one of these for 60 bucks. I wish I would have been quicker it was local on cl. I hope to get one someday. I am glad it is sounding great, gotta love dem duals. :)

PS: What are you using for a mat in the pic? Thanks

At first, I used a mat from shelf liner, with just about the same thickness as the factory mat.
What you see in the pic, though, is my best mat to date.
It consists of the silicon anti-splatter fry pan shield, topped by a thinner shelf liner mat. Combined thickness is virtually the same as the factory mat. This plus the platter-damping tweaks have yielded a very quiet platter.

The layers cannot be glued together, as not much sticks to the bottom mat.

NoTransistors,

Now you've got me wanting to pull out my 1229Q and attempt to tweak it. Can you direct me to a thread or describe a bit more what/how you dampened your 1229Q? Mine has been serviced by Bill, but otherwise I have not modded it. Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks, John

I made a thread on the tweaks for my 1219, just a few months ago. Even has pics. I am going out now, so please remind me tonight if you have not searched it out by then.

Illness is so very much more profitable than health, that one wonders if we will ever be privy to cures.

We already are, for many diseases. While the actual mechanisms are complex and not fully understood (involving a combination of genetics, microbial loads in cells that can interact with DNA composition in replicating cells, and the biochemical environment of cells), the "cures" for MOST of the diseases that continue to plague mankind --degenerative and immune-related diseases like heart attacks and cancer, etc...-- consist really of correcting the cause. In the overwhelming number of cases, that boils down primarily to DIET. WE MAKE OURSELVES ILL BY WHAT WE PUT IN OUR MOUTHS! I've posted on this a few times before, so I won't belabor it again here, but if you have high blood pressure, atherosclerosis/heart disease, cancer, a stroke (in many but not all cases), diabetes, or any of a few hundred other diagnoses, you did it to yourself by eating foods not really right for our species. MOST of what people actually eat today falls in to that category. This is a simple cause-effect fact, just as surely as the lung cancer a smoker has was self-created from inhaling things people weren't designed/evolved to inhale.

Start eating ONLY things that a caveman 30,000 years ago might have recognized and eaten. Eliminate the junk and additives and processed "franken-foods" that you've been brainwashed into thinking of as "normal" and grown used to consuming. Eat mostly raw plant foods for a few weeks/months, in good variety and ample quantities, and watch your illnesses disappear.

Seth,
Found the 1219 thread, thanks. I read it closely. John
