Stacking Avid 103's?

I came across a pair of avid 103's at a flea market today. The fellow wanted 20 for the pair. They appear to be nicer looking than a pair I had picked up several years ago for 9.99$. My old pair sounds quite nice. I currently listen to jbl 4430s. Has anyone ever listened to stacked pairs of avid 103s? Is it worth going back to try and get them for 20? Are stacked avids NOT going to have the magic of stacked advents? Anyone with any experience or advice out there. I could use some. I dont' want to travel the 35min each way for no good reason. Thanks Norm

I think it's worth a shot. Will it have the purported magic of an Advent stack? I don't know. Would I grab a pair of 103's for a Jackson? Hell yes. Shoot, the Philips tweeters alone are worth that.

'toze in 3, 2, 1...

I once tried stacking Avids on top of Advents then feeding 40 watts per speaker from a Marantz quad.

Call me a mad scientist.

Sounded OK but too wobbly. Might try it again for grins when the wife is out.

Any images of 103's

Does anyone have a picture of the Avid 103's or can they ID these speakers as them?

Mark, thanks for posting that old ad. At the end it refers to speaker stands. Any idea what they looked like for this speaker model? Thanks Norm

I would assume they are referring to the 3" or so high base shown in the pic. Mine don't have that - perhaps it was a separate "stand". :scratch2:

Here's a pic of my Avid 103's for reference:

I think that little base in the yellow picture is the speaker stand they talk about, as the speakers have flat bottoms normally.

A few weeks ago the voice coil started rubbing in one of the woofers. I kind of hated to do it, but I replaced them with modern Polk db104 woofers. I definitely picked up a lot of below 35Hz response but lost a dB or so right around 350Hz - 400Hz. Nothing that can't be fixed on the EQ though.

Here's what they look like now:

Aye Nat that is what they are. I origionally posted about them before I picked them up and after not being able to drag up anything on an Altec 103, it was suggested that they could be one of those. I am not impressed with them. Those 50 year old PB's blow them away.Hey that's a thought. Maybe I will take that 10" out of the PB cabinet mount it in the other one and see if I can split the cabinet in 1/2 with low end.:smoke:
