Altec Help

I have always wanted a pair of Altec Voice of the Theater, and love the look of the AR 19 But I have very limited space on one side of my room ( 2 Foot wide only) Maybe some one can chime in, my room is 15 X 22 with 10 foot cielings and stone walls, I listen to classic rock, and I have a Pioneer SX 1250 ,160 WPC to drive them with. Can anyone tell me if there is an Altec model LIKE the 19 of smaller size? I would like to have Horns if I could ,other brands , I am open to. I just saw a pair of Fisher XP 10's go on ebay but I didn't know anything about them so I passed, I guess what I asking is the a model that is a baby sized AR 19??:scratch2:

Build or have built your own cabinets of correct volume and porting with the dimensions proportionate to your needs, and load them with mod 19 components.

Hopefully Aker gamalot will chime in.

TB is also a wealth of Altec information and experience. I mentioned gamalot since he has built and would probably share pics of exceptionally nice DIY boxes with mod 19 components.

The 15's are indeed little brothers to the 19's, but there are issues with the foam edge woofers, most notably the foam, but to some ears, mine included they do not posess the same "magic" as the larger 15 inch 2 way systems where the transition between woofer and horn is concerned.

Plans for original Altec boxes can be found here:

Model 15 or 14. Not the same 'big sound' of the 19, but a good speaker nonetheless. Smaller footprint than the 19 as well.

The Altec 890C Bolero was a "small" speaker that maintained the big sound and technicolor midrange of the big Altecs.

Mostly I think because of the model 406 10" woofer it used. Altec engineers spent considerable effort developing the driver in order to keep the Altec sound intact in a small package. the 406 uses a 3" voicecoil and the motor of the model 414 12" woofer. The cone has a dual profile; straight sided near the center and then concave towards the outer edge. A very unusual and splendid sounding driver.

I used Boleros when I lived in a Chicago high rise and needed small speakers and still use them in the music room of my house to play a digital piano and a digital drumkit through. And CDs too at times.

Hi Surfacetension

If your looking for Altec's with "almost" the punch of the 19's but in a smaller size look for Model 14's (Model 19's little brother) or Model 15's ... or you can look for the Altec Stonehenge I, II, or III's. Based on what you listen too, the size of the room, and wanting horns I'd look for Model 14's 1st then Stonehenge III 2nd. I currently own and play tunes on Model 14's, Stonehenge II, and Stonehenge III ... and would recommend any of them to a friend :music: :D

Thanks guy's , is there a website where you can see the diff, speaker and cabs they made? What I need to are sizes of the cabs

I just measured my model 14s and they are 21inch x 17inch. I'm right now using them in my listening room which measures 12ft x 16ft and they are "just right" :music:

If you are really pressed for space you may want to look at the Stonehenge's as they are a more upright speaker. My Altec Stonehenge III are 19inch x 16inch ... and my Stonehenge II are even smaller but I'm to tired to go upstairs and measure them :D
