Old tungsol 6550

I just picked up a 50's amp that looks like it's barely been used - felt like I was the first person to ever look inside. It has these really old Tung Sol 6550 tubes - but what's the deal with the glue around the base? Has anyone seen these before?

They look like grey plates to me but your pic kinda washes out the color. Someone added that glue after the fact because the bases may have separated.

Yeah, very desirable black plates.

The glue is strange. I've seen zillions of tubes but none with glue around the base. I have no doubt that it was added post-factory. Those types of bases are very firmly affixed and I would be very surprised if they separated.

My guess is that the bases are fine and someone added the glue as a precaution.

Any cracks in the metal ring? Some octal tubes were made that way in the '40s and they're prone to splitting and cracking - I hope T-S had that fixed by the '50's...
