I received more catalogs this weekend. Lots of new photos, for sure.

However, one particular component has caught my eye. I have seen it before, but this particular photo made a statement. Remember now, this is from a 1972 catalog featuring 4-channel components.

Just take a look at the photo, and tell me if this is not one handsome, majestic piece of equipment.

it is handsome. It was my second quad receiver. If you take a look at a heathkit or akai quad receiver from around the same time, they share a VERY similar look -- almost identical other than badging and dial lamp color.

I have several QX-9900.they sound great ,esp after a complete recapping..
the interesting thing i see and hear are different stories about the specs..the manual i have says 38 Wpc,another one i seen said 28Wpc,now the one you posted specs show 30WpC 4 channels driven,i have not measured all 4 channels yet.. someday..it is a very nice unit to show off.. impressive..

explain to me the two orange and two green lights on the left hand side. independent speaker control?

Actually, my theory is that this Pioneer was a rebadged Akai AS-970. I base this on the fact that it shares no styling with anything else in the Pioneer line, while the entire Akai stereo receiver line at that time (AA-940, AA-910DB, etc.) shared the exact same styling. Perhaps Pioneer felt 'under the gun' to get a quad receiver to market quickly, and sold the rebadged Akai while it developed the QX-x4x line? :scratch2:

A and B speakers switches, A being red, B being green

Hmm, is it true that Pioneer also rebadged AKAI and did not developed all gear themselves?? :scratch2:
What I'm also wondering: Why did Doc's second photo say: Not sold in the US/Canada?? Is that valid for the 30W version only?

QX-9900 is the only Pioneer Reciever with this design, I know. There was a co-operation with AKAI for shure.

Siamac, is that a fully working unit you have there? And is the "4" a Nixie tube display? That is a very special looking unit!

I have worked on many of these and it all is pioneer inside..wirewraps and all..pioneer stamps on some parts..but they have a punch in power and do sound great..the owners manual points out using 4 channels in a bi-amp mode,also i like the fact that you can select "2 channel mode" and get left and right out of all four channels..(1and3 being left and 2and 4 being right..)
hard to find one that the meters have not failed yet though..fun job to repair them..
this is all interesting about this unit,
