Fisher ST-530; How I spent my day after Thanksgiving

macaltec

Metal Master
I aquired two sets of Fisher ST-530 speakers a few months ago. One pair is mine to keep in return for refoaming the other pair and returning them to the generous individual that donated them. I had company coming in last night so my listening space needed to be cleaned for the shuffling of various speakers to test. While cleaning I dug one pair of these speakers out and set to refoam when the cleaning was done. The first woofers went like clockwork. The second had some VC rub so I held off on attatching the foam to the basket. I didn't feel good about it but had already burried the other two speakers so getting another driver was not a desirable option for me. Boy was I mistaken. After cutting the spider and unsoldering the VC leads I ended up unbolting the magnet from the basket and completely disassembling the magnet to remove the trash from the VC gap. I noticed that the magnet had shifted between the two metal plates it was sandwiched between. Long story short, it would have been quicker and easier to dig out another driver. What a PITA that thing was. Took me 2 hours to get it back together and aligned. It works though. The sound is typical of most of the "big 15 inch woofers crammed into a cabinet of inferior dimensions speakers that seemed to abound in the 70's". Not horrible but not exciting either. The cabinets are very nice and very heavy. Sorry no pics of my handy work or the internals. I get a one track mind when I work "when I work". For those that are still with me here...................the pics:

What a great story!
Your friend doesn't know what a good friend you are.

I hope he doesn't see this thread for a while cause I'm outa 15" foams, I'm not gonna dig out the other pair anytime soon, and I wanna listen to them some more and see if I warm up to them.

I'm sure he's not in a rush to get them back!!!

You needed something to do to keep busy anyway... trade'em to somebody for something. And hey, they sounded pretty good with the Fisher Quad they came with! Or perhaps it was the "other stuff" that made them sound good...

After a bit more listening I'd say they are better than average. The LF response is coming a bit more alive the more I play them. It's hard to tell as I've had my head into the Altec horns so much lately that most everything else pales in comparison.

Well, like I said "one track mind". It became a personal vendetta with that magnet. The experience may be need later for another repair. Of course if I had some Maggies to listen to maybe I wouldn't be bothering with such things :D .
