i have a pair of infinity reference studio monitors (RSM). the number on the magnets of the midranges reads 490355 503TNF. i'm looking to buy a pair of midrange drivers from RSIII speakers which have the numbers 490355 611TNF on the magnets. will these drivers perform like stock installed in my speakers?

Yes, they are the same driver. Original PN is 902-0632, later replaced with 902-0470.

Yes, they are the same driver. Original PN is 902-0632, later replaced with 902-0470.

Oddly, the 902-0470, which is the part number given as a replacement midrange driver for the RSII, RSM, and others is actually a DVC 5" Watkins woofer as used in the Infinitesimal 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3. It seems strange that Infinity would sell them as replacements for conventional 5" midrange drivers but I have actually seen a Reference Studio Monitor for sale with the DVC driver installed as the midrange.

Attached is a pic of one of my pair of 902-0470 spares for my Infinitesimal 0.2's with both sets of inputs visible as well as the resistance of each stamped on the magnet along with the part number. They also have black poly cones instead of either grey or clear as were found on the Infinitesimals, and so are likely a pair of the replacements that Infinity had available.

I have seen other substitutions recommended by infinity that did not seem like they would keep the original sound.

In fact, for my RSIIIa's I had to replace one of the mid voice coils - it sounded different enough from the original that I ended up replacing the one in the other speaker as well so they sounded the same as each other. The clear dome looked the same but the tinsel leads were thicker on the replacements. Changes had been made and they affected the sound. Not necessarily in a bad way.

well, just installed an rs-iii midrange (490355 611TNF) today in my left speaker. left the original rsm midrange (490355 503TNF) in the right speaker. don't notice any tonal difference thus far... should i? i know Tedrick said they're the same drivers but i can't help but wonder why they have different part numbers?
