BA-5000 vrs G-33000

OK, lets suppose................

one owns a very clean BA-5000 which he's got about $2000 tied up in. Along comes a chance to buy a G-33000 complete with box and manual from the original owner.......what should the guy do????

but wait there is a catch....in order to get the big G, the guy also has to buy 2 pair of SP-x11000.

Lets also assume the guy doesn't want the speakers so would be forced to sell them, depending on what the speakers sold for, the cost of the G-33000 would be around 3000, +/-1000. (which in this guys case would probably end up maxing out the VISA :tears: )

now some tech ?s, is the power section of the g-33000 the same as the BA-5000? is the g also autoformer? From what I gather the BA is just as heavy as both parts of the G.

You could make a brother a sweet deal on some Yamaha NS-1000's to help fund the effort :naughty: Personally, I like separates and would stick with the BA-5000. If you really, really want it, I'd say try selling some "extra" gear quick.

Agreed on selling gear for something kickass. Just inventory your systems and figure what you would rather have. i sacraficed a few receivers and amps for my AR-9s and my Sui quad 9001. Well worth it. no where near power like the BA5000 or G33k, but you get my point...

If you really want to get the G-33K, you can buy it and sell the speakers, some folks really like Sansui speakers, so they shouldn’t be too difficult to sell.

No doubt, the G-33K is a tremendous receiver, the G models are great, but don’t expect it to “outmuscle” and sound as good as the mighty BA-5000. The BA-5000 is in a league of its own in the Sansui family. Just to give a few examples, the transformers are clearly visible on the BA-5K as they actually form the top part of the case (and accounts for a good chunk of its enormous 108 lb weight). And although the G-33K is rated at 300W, unlike the mighty BA-5000, it was not specifically designed to be used outside in sound reinforcement applications, although it can be tried. The difference is, the BA-5K has three separate speaker taps, (8, 4, and 2 ohms) so its not going to sneeze at whatever speaker loads you attempt to throw at it. I don’t think the G-33K receiver has quite the same flexibility. The G-33K is also not setup to be bridged like the BA-5000 can (and little bro BA-3000) to double the power to 600W. (As if 300W wasn’t enough J

I also would imagine it would be more convenient to lift a BA-5000 than a G33K since handles are provided on the BA-5K to cut down on the chances of giving yourself a hernia.

I would buy the G33000 and the speakers list it all on ebay and with the money you make buy whatever you want. The record G33000 went for over $3000 and it didn`t have the original box or manual. The spx11000s are extremely rare and I would figure quite valuable.

The amp section of the G-33000 is totally different than the BA-5000. The BA-5000 is in a league of its own. That said, the BA-5000 is not nearly as rare as a G-33000, let alone one with it's original box and documents. Having both in the same house would put you in a league of your own as a collector. Get the G, sell the speakers and whatever other lesser pieces are necessary to score the G-33.

And if you need assistance lifting the G33K beast w/o rack handles, I'm sure some good folks here at AK can volunteer to give you a helping hand. :thmbsp:

At those kinds of prices, the answer(s) lie all in the ultimate condition of the equipment. If it's only in average condition, who cares really if it's got the box? In this case though, I assumer there are either two or even four separate boxes involved. All the accompanying paperwork is definitely a big plus.

But, like I said, it all comes down to the overall condition of both the preamp and amp. Even a single, slight scratch, gouge, scrape, scuff, dent will affect the perceived value substantially in an audio enthusiast or collector's eyes.

Totally a matter of taste. Receivers are for people that like everything on it. It's more of a convenience thing. It's got so much control on it. Now, the power amps, you need a pretty decent preamp to run the monsters. Using the wrong preamp will negate the power of the monster. I think the CA-3000 is the best Sansui preamp to use for this amp. Those run $300-500 depending on condition. These take more room but more modular. The BA-5000 circuitry should be simpler than receivers because it has so much stuff on it from tone control, preamp section, balance, speaker control, power control, where as the BA-5000 has the amplifier section only.
I personally prefer separates.
My 2 cents.

Get it now. Take some good pix, and flip it immediately on eBay. Then take the profit and buy more albums or ceedees and enjoy the BA5000.

Ba 5000

Just my 2 cents.... I have a G 8000, 9700 +tons of other units. I am GIVING all of them up because I found MY holy grail... I just got a BA 3000, and CA 3000 with a TU 9900 tuner, that being said, the BA series BLEW ME AWAY  conpaired to the G units, (and I love G units) The Gs are going, and the BA SAYS !!! :thmbsp: not to mention HOW BEAUTIFUL the BA 5000 is. I would LOVE to have that anyday. the only way my BA 3000 goes, it will be because I found a BA 5000...lol.... just my opinion...Michael... :smoke:

Do you HAVE to sell everything off now to be able to PAY for the newly acquired separates perhaps?

just wondering....did the "One" make the decision on what to do :scratch2: hope the "one" still has the BA. :thmbsp:

This is really a tough choice.
The BA5000 is literally in a league of it's own being the only Sansui SS amp with output transformer coupling (which is most of the reason for it's enormous weight). Because of this, it's construction is very different from all other Sansui amps.
The G22k/33k on the other hand are a notch over all other G series receivers, and pretty much in a league of their own as concerns monster receivers, period. If there is one monster you want to ow, it would be this one.
The answer to this conundrum is quite obvious: get both, sell the speakers. Each of them represents the pinnacle of what Sansui had to offer.

follow up

well, I was out of town for a few weeks and then on vacation. I called the seller last week and he told me the unit is in for servicing. I asked if it had a problem and he said "no, but it's 25 yrs old and these things tend to get dirty from sitting around" He says to call him in a month when it gets back from the shop and once he is back from an out of town visit. His price has gone form 4500CND to 4000 and possibly back to 4500 after servicing.(for g33000 and 2 pr 11000)
It sounds like his son is working at several repair shops and is either doing the service or having a co-worker do it.

I'll call again in a month to see what the story is then........
